Transitioning from High School to College for Special Education Students
This four page paper presents an examination of special education transition services and how they relate to transitioning students from high school to college. The writer also explores the duties of the transition specialist. There were three sources used to complete this paper.
Introduction Years ago, special education students were educated in a classroom down the hall. They were rarely provided interaction with their non-disabled peers, and their education consisted mostly of sitting in the class waiting to go home. A landmark civil rights decision in the1960's changed the face of special education forever, and today, special education students are federally protected and mandated to be educated in the least restrictive environment. This has led to many special education students making the decision

William Shakespeare's Much Ado about Nothing
Roger Ebert described Shakespeare's play, Much Ado about Nothing, as a comedy, in which the most important thing is the style: "A play like Much Ado about Nothing is all about style. I doubt if Shakespeare's audiences at the Globe took it any more seriously than we do. It is farce and mime and wisecracks, and dastardly melodrama which all come right in the end, of course, because this is a Comedy." Indeed, Much Ado about Nothing seems to be made exclusively of the pranks and games that the characters play on each other. As such, the play lacks any consistency in action or meaning, to the extent that it can not be taken seriously by the audience. In this sense, Shakespeare's text is a pure comedy, with no tangible content. Nevertheless, the

ING Directs' marketing strategy is to provide a no-frills, high return online savings account that appeals to customers who are web-literate and have a low need for hand holding as part of their ongoing banking relationships. The company has successfully found their target market of 30 - 50 year olds who on average deposit $14,000 in a savings account, and

Auditing Case Study
1. Auditor's Objectives: According to an essay published online by the United States General Accounting Office, managers and other decision-makers need to know how much inventory there is and where it is located in order to make effective budgeting, operating, and financial decisions and to create accurate financial reports. Physical inventory involves counting the individual items in stock at a particular date and time to ensure accuracy of inventory quantities and values as reported on the organization's Balance Sheet. Proper inventory accountability requires that detailed records of produced or acquired inventory be maintained, and that this inventory be properly reported in the organization's financial reports. Physical controls and

PI: A Plethora of Historical Debate
Since the time of ancient Babylonia, the perplexing challenge of how to calculate the ratio between a circle's circumference and diameter has been of interest to humans. Pi has evoked the interest of mathematicians from ancient times to the present. Many have tried to find the end of this long string of digits. Pi has been the source of mystery and intrigue throughout the ages. In the world of today's supercomputers, this phenomenon continues to perplex the bytes and bits to exhaustion. The following will explore some of the more interesting historical tidbits about this most fascinating number. Ancient Beginnings The name of the ancient mathematician who first discovered that the ratio between a circle's circumference and diameter i

The Open Boat: Analysis of the Characters
The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the short story "The Open Boat" by Stephen Crane. Specifically it will discuss four conflicts faced by the characters in the story. This story is full of conflict between the characters and between the natural world and the characters. Four men, lost at sea in a tiny boat, with only some water and whiskey, have the will to survive, but the conflicts in the story are all set against them. Without conflict, this story would not be nearly as meaningful or as interesting.
One of the major conflicts in this story is the age-old conflict between man and nature. The men must conquer the sea in order to survive, and so, they are in conflict with the sea, which does not care about their survival at all. Crane writes, "A singular disadvantage of the s

Cardinals Stadium Review
Introduction The world witnessed the ceremonial groundbreaking for the University of Phoenix Stadium on April 12, 2003. The University of Phoenix Stadium is by far the biggest and grandest adaptable sports arena in the world. Glendale, Arizona serves as its home, right across the Jobing.com Arena which is the official residence of the NHL Phoenix Coyotes. The NFL Arizona Cardinals along with the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl are its principal leaseholders. The University of Phoenix which is a for-profit institution dedicated to the sphere of mature studies legally attained the naming privileges by September last year. Originally the stadium was called the "Cardinals Stadium". The magnificence and artistic beauty of the University of Phoenix Stadiu

Auditing: Four Types of Reports
1: There are four different types of audit reports. There are (1) unqualified reports, (2) qualified reports, (3) adverse reports, and (4) disclaimer reports. An unqualified report is issued when the independent auditor finds that the books and records of the company being audited conform to generally accepted accounting principles. A qualified report would be issued when the auditor encounters one of two types of situations which do not comply with generally accepted accounting principles. However, the rest of the financial statements are fairly presented. A qualified

SWOT Analysis: Arista Records
A "SWOT" analysis is usually performed when managers wish to determine their company's current position in the market (Garner, 2005). The acronym refers to the four areas of "strengths", "weaknesses", "opportunities", and "threats". Such an analysis on Arista Records will show its current position, so that the company's managers and associates can determine what is needed for optimal future development. It can therefore be regarded as a key strategy in ensuring a company's current well-being and future survival. Strengths One of Arista's greatest strengths is the fact that it is part of the global music conglomerate, BMG, the Bertelsmann Music Group that has its basis in Germany. In the current music industry, it is practically essen

The Old Nurse's Story
The supernatural elements in Elizabeth Gaskell's short story "The Old Nurse's Story" develop slowly, building on the atmosphere the author creates as she describes the characters, the setting, and the situation. Certain Gothic elements are evident in the story, from the isolated old house to the limited number of people in the house, the storms outside, and the mysterious sounds heard inside. The supernatural element enters the story after the situation is made clear, and there is no hint from the Old Nurse as she tells her story to her mistress's children that this will be a ghost story. Instead, she appears simply to be telling the children a story about their mother, beginning with the hiring of the nurse before her mistress would be

A History of Pi
The magic of numbers is nothing new to the field of literature. Over the past two decades many popular books have explored the theme of immutable numbers and their special properties. A quarter of a century ago, the book "A History of Pi" took the nation by storm and mathematics became an interesting and publicly identifiable discipline rather than the realm of scientists. A newly published book on another mythical but immutable number has come to the national consciousness. Robert Kaplan's book "The Nothing That Is: A Natural History of Zero". The number zero has many properties that make it unique over any other number. Deep in the heart of elementary mathematics, this is a term that we all learn and it is left unchanged whatever it

Product Dumping
Consumer safety has been a business ethics issue for as long as there have been regulatory agencies testing products and deeming them safe or unsafe. The function of such organizations if to verify the safety of products based on testing and reports of unsafe effects and especially those involved in human fatalities. A concern that has to be addressed by business is the relative risk of a product and the relative resources that are invested in it, both in the sense of research and development and product inventories. One rather modern global occurrence has been that when a product is deemed unsafe by the Consumer Products Safety Commission and either recalled or illegalized for sale in the United States, product inventories are then shifte

The Yellow Wallpaper
Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper explores one woman's struggle with society's view of a woman's role and takes the reader through the main character's psychological journey. A vast amount of criticism has been written about this story, most of it focusing on the influence the story has had on feminism, along with a close look at what the story achieves. What the story is, at its core, is an autobiographical novel that presents a critique of the relationship between men and women and society's suffocation of a woman's ability to be an individual and live with an independent state of mind. To truly understand what The Yellow Wallpaper is about, one must first have a general background understanding of the author. In 1887 G

Women Rights
Women rights have gained greater attention with feminist activities and call for liberation of women. The consistent and gradual erosion of patriarchic system is the only way true liberation can be attained. The efforts made for women rights have been impressive but the progress in this connection is still marred by serious issues and ugly incidents. In the Middle East, women are still suffering grave gender discrimination on regular basis. Violence against women is a common problem and though it is also a big issue in the West, in the Middle East it doesn't get any attention, which makes it pervasive. Lack of education can be cited as one of the main reasons why violence continues to exist in this society. We can argue that had lack of edu

Doping Moral Dilemma
The Eric Lamaze case poses an interesting dilemma to the Canadian Olympic Committee. In a state of panic resulting from false information given to him about his removal from the Olympic Team, he began to suffer from intense depression resulting in intoxication and a lapse in judgment in using an illegal substance. While this illegal substance is not one that can be considered to help Mr. Lamaze gain an unfair advantage over the competition, there are rules that athletes have to follow and that the Canadian Olympic Committee must follow to preserve fairness and protect the integrity of the sport. By the very definition, athletes are subject to additional rules and policies affecting even one's personal life and there are standards which a

Everyman (Medieval Literature) Review
I.Introduction The medieval play, Everyman, has defined what literature has come to know as The Everyman: the common, average person or character that is meant to represent every person. It is the character that is meant to allow the reader to identify with them. It is the character that represents society in general. Thus, the real message behind the medieval play Everyman is a social critique of what is wrong about The Everyman. II.Background Information Everyman can be traced back to the fifteenth century where it originated in a Dutch or Flemish play called Elckerlijc authored by Peter van Diest. The version must commonly read today is the sixteenth century English version. At its core Everyman is a morality play. Everyman is t

Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales
In Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, an interesting mix of people gather to comment on various issues in the society. The most commendable aspect of their stories is that none of them seems to be interested in making an issue out of anything. They are simply who are they and through them we get to see beyond the caricatures and stereotypes that society has constructed. These people are all very different from what they are expected to be. Wife of Bath, for example, is not your average timid woman of the 16th or 17th century. She is a bold, lusty, and vocal person with a mind of her own who can be described as a man-eater. Middle Ages were not exactly a time of static moral values. Things had been changing but change was slow and pe

Contrasting Theories of Capitalism: Marx, Durkheim, and Weber
Emile Durkheim placed great emphasis on the division of labor (DOL) in society. He wondered about what it was, and how it applied to everything that society encompassed, such as individual people, animals, and plants. He was not the first to ponder these things and try to come up with an explanation that made sense of them. As society continues to change and grow there are some aspects of it that stay the same. Rebellion, the attempt to find individuality among the masses, and the independence of the people as being separate from the whole of the group are some of the things that have remained static for decades. There is belief among many sociologists that disputes can be settled by the scientific method and that people are able to r

Biology in the Popular Media Comparison
The purpose of this essay is to contrast representations of scientific findings in the popular presses with their original publication in scientific journals. In this case, I will compare the findings of Bininda-Emonds et al. (2007) in Nature with the report of the same findings as reported by Wilford (2007) in The New York Times.
Reading over the original scientific study, we discover that the research team came to a rather important conclusion for the study of the development of biological species. Traditionally, it has been hypothesized that the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (the KT boundary) was the precipita

Executive Summary: Arista Records
Arista Records was founded by Clive Davis in 1974. The story of Arista and its founders appear to embody the ideals of the American paradigm in that Davis turned personal misfortune into one of the most prosperous record labels available today. Through innovation and an adherence to his personal values in the face of criticism and evidence to the contrary, Davis built the label of Arista to sky-rocketing success. It is precisely this success that helped the company survive in spite of disasters such as the Milli Vanilli scandal. Arista's story begins with Clive Davis being fired from CBS Records. He was subsequently employed as a record and music consultant for Columbia Pictures. Here he rose to the position of president in 1974, co

John Milton: About the Author
The whole poem is actually fanned into a total of 12 volumes, the shortest volume in this pack of dozen is story is Book VII, with only 640 line while the longest volume is Book IX, with 1189 lines. The whole poem basically revolves around two story lines: the first of Adam and Eve and their disobedience and the second of Satan and his rebellious plot. This is the first time when Adam and Eve are brought forth in a very familial/marital and human setting without much contradiction. Satan's attempts to induce Eve to take a bite of the fruit firm the Tree of Knowledge, an act that God had forbidden, had worked successfully and Eve had convinced Adam to pursue the same act. This leads to a fight between the two once they realize their mista

Language that Influences: Tannen's analysis
My original idea for this paper was to expand my knowledge of Deborah Tannen's theory on gender communication. However, when I put "Deborah Tannen" into a scholarly database, it came up with an article she wrote on the use of language by politicians to influence the American public. The article was so interesting I decided to expand my knowledge of how words can be used to manipulate emotional reactions in people. Politicians do it when they have an agenda and want the public to accept it. I knew already, for example, that words are often chosen that reveal the speaker's feelings more than they describe actual reality. For instance, the words thrifty and cheap both describe similar behavior. But if we call a person thrifty, it's a co

Non-Verbal Communication and Sales
Non-verbal communication is fascinating. I know that we learn to understand it before we learn to talk. A two-month old baby understands smiling! I know also that non-verbal messages can be ambiguous at times. Some non-verbal messages differ in meaning from culture to culture, and when there is a conflict between what a person says and the non-verbal messages the person sends with body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice, the listener will believe the non-verbal rather than the verbal. "I'm not mad at you," delivered loudly with a scowl and in an angry tone of voice will be received and decoded as "I am angry with you." I found an interesting article on how sales people can use non-v

Frederick Douglass: The Narrative of the Life
The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave Another advantage I gained in my new master was, he made no pretensions to, or profession of, religion; and this, in my opinion, was truly a great advantage. I assert most unhesitatingly, that the religion of the south is a mere covering for the most horrid crimes,--a justifier of the most appalling barbarity,--a sanctifier of the most hateful frauds,--and a dark shelter under, which the darkest, foulest, grossest, and most infernal deeds of slaveholders find the strongest protection. Were I to be again reduced to the chains of slavery, next to that enslavement, I should regard being the slave of a religious master the greatest calamity that could befall me. (Chapter X, 33)
