Linguistic Imperialism as Discriminatory and Exclusionary Weapon Against Mexican Americans 1. Introduction
The United States has experienced a well-publicized and hotly debated inundation of new citizens. The new immigration wave of Hispanic laborers, incited by the proliferation of free trade and the promise of a more vibrant economy in the United States, has inclined a continually intensifying arrival of Spanish-speaking citizens to the central employment center on the North American continent. This has been met with both resistance, mostly founded on American labor class presumptions of increased job competition, and with excitement, generally held by those who believe in the overarching economic opportunities present in such swelling immigration patterns. To groups on both sides, there is a concerted interest in cu
| 1913 | Southwest Airlines: The Role Leadership Has Played 1.What role has leadership played in the success of Southwest Airlines?
At the center of the leadership strategies of Southwest Airlines is the culture founder Herb Kelleher diligently worked to create with the other founders and first employees of the airline (Keidel, 2005). The founders realized that defining the values they wanted their company based on would best be permeated throughout the company culture through their example. They all, including Mr. Kelleher, are strong believers in leading through example (Hardage, 2006). What differentiated the leadership approach of Southwest relative to ot
| 491 | Paralanguage in Everyday Use Perhaps the most obvious use of nonverbal communication occurs when young children make use of illustrators, such as when a small child tries to tell a story about a big dog he or she encountered. "It was this big," the child might say, spanning his arms as far as he or she can reach to indicate the animal's massive size. However, not only children use nonverbal communication. Recently, when the senior senator from Massachusetts Ted Kennedy was released from the hospital, he gave a thumbs-up sign to the assembled media outside of the hospital. Despite the fact he had been diagnosed with a likely inoperable brain tumor, the casual, seemingly careless and enthusiastic physical gesture was supposed to undercut the sobering nature of the infor
| 695 | Social Responsibility in Advertising Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) emphasizes that firms should think about ALL "stakeholders" rather than just the "shareholders" in ALL of its operations (Value Chain) ("Stakeholders as Shareholders", 1996). It seems only logical that business leaders should engage in responsible decision making and behavior in their personal and professional roles. Yet, critics of CSR contend that the job of the business is to focus only on making money; "... the notion that the corporation should apply its assets for social purposes, rather than for the profit of its owners, the shareholders, is irresponsible" (Atkins, 2006). However, these critics fail to realize that CSR is an investment that will actually help a company's bottom line because co
| 952 | Organizational Behavior: Conflict and Decision Making There are many issues that are often seen in an organization. One of these is the dichotomy between conflict and decision making (Robbins, 2008). How these are addressed, both by themselves and together, and how they are understood by the people in that organization can have much to do with how the organization progresses and whether the people in it get along and understand one another (Robbins, 2008). Conflict does not always come from bad decisions (Bhatnagar, 1988; Bem, 1977). It can come from disagreements over decisions that turn out to be good, and it can also come from failure to make decisions in a timely manner, or at all. Wherever it comes from, conflict is often tied to the decision making process, and it is an important and n
| 1500 | Broadcast News: Media Disinformation 1. Is the Dan Rather/Texas National Guard story an example of "media disinformation" (see text for definition of disinformation)? Why or why not?
Biased? A source of deliberate 'disinformation' or exciting interest in a story in a way that encourages a misinterpretation than points views to the truth? Not a deliberate act of disinformation, necessarily. Despite the allegations of the text, there is no indication that Dan Rather wanted to 'get' George Bush, even if the conservative media may have 'felt' that was the case. Sloppy r
| 432 | Australian Politics 1.A shift to a republic would be in Australia's best interests.
There have been a series of debates on the actual future of the Australian state. On the one hand, there are some who suggest that Australia would have a better future as an independent and sovereign republic; on the other hand, the current status as part of the Commonwealth is considered to be a better option for the nation and the state. However, serious attempts have been made and discussions are underway for what would the government consider to be by 2020 the Australian state and an Australian head of state (BBC, 2008).
In order to have a better assessment of this issue, there are several aspects to be taken into consideration which support the idea of an Australian repu
| 2184 | Ryan Newman Racing 1. How does Ryan Newman's passion for racing affect his NASCAR team?
NASCAR driver Ryan Newman has been racing cars since the age of 4 1/2, and he combines a passion for racing with sound management skills. He has been racing for the Penske Racing Team since 2000, and with a degree in vehicle structure engineering, he understands the nuances of a racecar, making him an even more valuable team member. His Web site notes, "Newman's degree made him and then crew chief Matt Borland the first driver-engineer/crew chief-engineer combination in NASCAR history" ("About Ryan," 2008). His passion and knowledge seem to affect his team in very positive ways. For example, he understands vehicle engineering, so he has a close bond with the crew chi
| 737 | Ethics in Healthcare: Maternity Units and the Banking of Umbilical Cord Blood According to Leroy C Edozien of the British Medical Journal, increasing numbers of women in maternity units across the United Kingdom are requesting doctors to collect and preserve their umbilical cord blood when delivering their babies to enable the women to privately store the umbilical cord stem cells for possible transfusions in the future. "Umbilical cord blood is rich in stem cells that can be used to treat patients with abnormal haematopoietic cell lines, childhood leukaemia, or metabolic diseases. Bone marrow is used for this purpose, but cord blood is cheaper and easier to obtain and less likely to trigger a harmful immune response or rejection in the recipient" (Edozien 2006). The NHS of Britain has been banking donated cord blo
| 841 | Medical Research and Ethics Medical ethics tends to be a problematic issue, particularly where certain types of research are concerned. Indeed, some practitioners hold the public good in such high regard that they violate human rights for its sake. Of particular importance here is patient consent. Indeed, this issue is central to whether medical ethics are being violated or not. If patient consent is obtained, and researcher has provided full disclosure of the nature and risks of the study, the ethical requirements of the study have been met. Some researchers are however tempted to violate these requirements for the sake of results. An extreme case of such a violation is the Tuskegee syphilis study, which as become widely publicized as an example of gross human
| 2233 | Why I Want to be a Physician Being a physician is very important to me, and I believe that I have much to offer to the medical field. My sister is currently a medical resident and my mother was a doctor for many years. I grew up in a household where intelligence, perseverance, and hard work were highly prized and have carried that opinion with me into adulthood, as I know that anything can be accomplished when it is believed in and worked for strongly enough. In addition, my ability to speak several different languages fluently
| 404 | A National Health Care System 1. Of course, those who are uninsured are the first to benefit from a national health care system, because they gain access to health care they could not afford before. Many businesses would benefit too, because their health plan costs would reduce, and that means lower costs for many products and services. Many health care facilities would benefit as well, because their paperwork and insurance processing would be reduced to one entity. One study shows, however, that because of free health care in Canada, more people seek treatment, so there are longer waits for treatment, and more people actually suffer from some diseases, which is certainly not a benefit (O'Neill, and O'Neill, 2007). This would certainly be a concern, so one way to ma
| 690 | Myself, the Writer Writing, to me, is a kind of liberation. It is a tool to help me concertize all the energy that continues to build inside me. It is a way for me to simply let go, get crazy. It lets me shed all rational justifications and just let loose. If a painter makes use of a canvass to lash out all his ill feelings, then a piece of paper, and a pen (or my laptop) is my canvass and easel. Putting ideas, feelings, and experience in words make things more real, mor
| 366 | How Does Poverty Affect Children in School? Poverty, family instability, and early exposure to violence are but a few hardships typical of growing up in a low-income environment. Children are confronted with obstacles early on when they live in low-income families relating to academic, personal and social success. The work of Raffo et al (2007) states findings that include the fact that low income "is a strong predictor of low educational performance." The work of Brooks-Gunn and Duncan (1997) states findings that children living in "extreme poverty or who live below the poverty line for multiple years appear, all other things being equal, to suffer the worst outcomes." (1997) Additionally stated is that the timing of poverty is also important for specific outcomes for children and that "children who experience poverty during their preschool and early school years have lower rates of school completion than other children and adolescents who experience poverty only in later years." (Brooks-Gunn and Duncan, 1997) Children who live below the poverty threshold are "1.3 times as likely as nonpoor children to experience learning disabilities and developmental delays." (Brooks-Gunn and Duncan, 1997) This work is a qualitative research study in the form of a review of literature for the purpose of disseminating the impacts of poverty on children in school and how poverty affects the academic achievement of students.
| 2325 | The Bowden Way: 50 Years of Leadership Wisdom There are many books on leadership and how to improve the qualities needed for leading a company or organization. They all offer advice and techniques that can be applied to almost every domain possible. Nonetheless, they engage the reader in a technical marathon which very few can actually understand to their core. On the other hand, there are books on leadership which try to introduce the reader in a parallel universe of the self, of the writer. The authors of such books create a detail narration of their own experience while emphasizing their own major accomplishments or their misfortunes. Still, there are also autobiographical books that focus precisely on the life experience of one individual. "The Bowden Way: 50 Years of Leadership Wi
| 1006 | Gridiron Gang: Adolescent Athletes in the Kilpatrick Detention Center The 2006 film Gridiron Gang is based loosely on a true story about adolescent athletes in the Kilpatrick detention center. Although the film is filled with cliches, it actually captures essential truths about the nature of coaching and especially of coaching adolescents. Sean Porter (The Rock) is a supervisor at Kilpatrick who incorporates football into the regime at the juvenile detention center. His personal struggles mirror the experience of any high school coach but esp
| 383 | We are Marshall: Tragic Plane Crash That Killed Most of Marshall University's Varsity Football Team The 2006 film We are Marshall opens with the tragic plane crash that killed most of Marshall University's varsity football team. Everyone on the flight died including the coaching staff. The college president plans on canceling Marshall's football program, not just because of the tragedy but also because of his conflicts with the NCAA. However, the students and residents of the West Virginia town rally in support of the Marshall team. A few players who were
| 369 | Management: A Core Function of Any Organization Management is a core function of any organization, but its aims and methodologies differ depending on the nature, function, and spirit of the company. Depending also on whether the organization is private, governmental or not-for-profit, management and the characteristics of managers will differ significantly. Management and management theory have also changed dramatically over time, with emerging management theories focusing on diversity, global readiness, and communications skills. Managers in the twenty-first century also contend with issues related to globalization and diversification. Skills sets have therefore become more generalized, as organizations need managers who are flexible, willing to work in multiple environments and with ma
| 1670 | US History: Slavery The political push toward slave emancipation was not universally popular, even in the North. Fears abounded related to whether the new states and territories admitted to the union would favor free or slave-owning business interests. Moreover, the degrees to which Northerners and Republicans opposed slavery varied greatly. Some held radically liberal beliefs an
| 290 | Smoking and Habitual Behaviors Triggers have long been associated with habitual behaviors like smoking. When trying to quit a habit, individuals must often remove so-called triggers from their environment. Triggers for smoking may include sitting at a smokey bar; spending time with friends who still smoke; or getting into an argument with a coworker. Newly smoke-free individuals and those trying to quit may be especially vulner
| 320 | Ethical Implications of Globalization: Pros and Cons The impact of globalization has been seismic. Workers in China labor to create toys designed for children in the United States, an employee might work for a multinational firm in his hometown, or be transferred halfway across the world for his job. A customer might talk to a call center employee in an outsourced Indian call center to troubl
| 275 | How to Flunk Out Flunking out of college might be easy for some students, but for others the process proves difficult. To flunk out swiftly and efficiently requires skills many students do not have, including an insane ability to drink and do drugs. Receiving failing grades demands a conscientious effort to undo years of good habits. Students, especially those who enjoy learning, need to follow a few simple guidelines if they hope to fail.
First, you must take absolutely no interest in your classes to the point where falling asleep becomes easy and effortless even when the professor is watching. To snooze in class, with or without sound effects like snoring, is surprisingly taboo. The professor will feel gravely insulted and your fellow students will be m
| 697 | Healthy People Objective Part I
Proposal
Healthy People 2010 Objective: Reducing childhood obesity in poor communities
One of the stated goals of "Healthy People 2010" is to eliminate health disparities between different socioeconomic groups. Promoting a healthy weight and increasing physical activity must be the cornerstones of any health promotion policy, particularly in light of America's burgeoning obesity epidemic. Everyone in America, poor and rich, is growing fatter-however, the epidemic seems to be suffered by the poor in greater numbers, and the poor have fewer resources to treat the causes of obesity. The 1994-1996 Continuing Survey of Food Intakes of Individuals (CSFII) survey showed significantly higher Healthy Eating Index (HEI) scores for wealthi
| 1780 | Advertising Project Analysis I. Index
II. Executive Summary
Everyday believes that the current niche status for organic chocolate candy bars can be broadened to a much larger audience through the introduction of a lower-cost organic product that resembles current mass produced favorites. Perhaps fearing cannibalization of existing product lines, current organic chocolate competitors have introduced high-end "designer" type organic products, but have stayed away from introducing organic products that mirror non-organic ones. Everyday will attempt to break out of this mold, by offering organic products similar to Snickers, Hershey's Chocolate, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and M&M's at a price point that is lower than organic competitors. Just like in the market fo
