Suspense -Examined in the Film Rafifi
Suspense is a main element in many films. Whether it's in a Heist film or Romance film suspense is often central to the plot and development. After all, suspense is a bit like uneasy uncertainty and indecision but it can also be character driven like Memento and also object driven like in Jaws. Rififi uses suspense really well. It would be a good idea to use Rififi as an example of suspense. But how is this suspense created and followed through throughout the film? Suspense in Rififi is generated by objects, characters and events. The suspense in the events is evident when the heist is taking place. The suspense in this instance is generated by the chance that they might or might not complete their crime. This suspense is underlined by noise created or lack of noise, for the duration of them attempting to get inside and crack the safe. All you hear is the tapping on the floor, breathing, muffled coughs, the foam from the fire extinguisher and of course, the screeching of the drills drilling into the safe. Also people, note something special that happens which ends up ruining their 'perfect plan' which is of course when Cesar the safe cracker takes that ring. Another event that causes the suspense is when Jo le Suedois (Car
I hope you can see some of the techniques and elements that a suspenseful film has. Sometimes you need to watch the film twice to see what you missed that explained why it was unpredicted. Sometimes films make you think that something is going to happen but it goes off into a tangent which is completely different to what you thought was going to happen and you think how did that happen? A film like this is The 6th Sense. l Mohner) is sitting around waiting to take the money to get his son back. The suspense in created because you know just that little bit more than the characters and you know what's going to happen but they don't, this could be used as a meaning of the word suspense. This is like with the events such as when Jo is sitting around and with the characters stealing the jewels, because the events can also do this. Little is known about him and he also has a weird brother addicted to elicit drugs. This gets people more into the film and gets them to predicting what is going to happen. This is vital for the movie to end in the way it does. This is because you need examples before you can understand suspense and how it's applied and inter woven into the plot of the story. You know he's an ex-convict and he believes in "honor amongst thieves" but he also adds suspense in places around the film as does Cesar. He has a childish like personality, which is about all you know about him. Even though the movie is in black and white you can tell that the environment in which the movie was made in was damp, raining, cold and depressing, which adds suspense in an unusual way. Like with Cesar, the film doesn't show you much about him.
