Do Talk Shows Cultivate Adolescents' Views of the World?

Do talk shows cultivate adolescents' views of the world? The purpose of this prolonged experiment was to evaluate the effects of exposure to television talk shows that deal with lesbian or gay male relationships, transsexuality, and tattooing. This study shows how television program formats make their way around the world and influence adolescents all over. If one type or genre of programming is successful or popular in one culture, another place will transform the topics to fit in with their viewing audience and sell it. Talk shows exemplify these formats perfectly, although channels make an attempt to differentiate between them. By having a certain persona each talk show will appeal to different audiences. Despite these efforts to create a unique profile, topics discussed on these programs are similar. 60% identified privacy as the main topics (focusing on conflict situations in a family or partnership, while 34% of programs were personal relationships of guests, followed by 11% dealing with sexual or erotic issues, and 10% was lifestyle oriented. Audience data was compiled and showed that including sexual issues does not increase market shares, so why is it such a frequent piece of talk s

The experiment consisted of a questionnaire that assessed the participants general media use patterns, sessions with talk show material on five consecutive days, four daily TV show questionnaires to control participants' media use during the experimental procedure, and a final questionnaire given 1 week after the last session and measuring possible effects of the treatment. However it seems as though they left a lot of unanswered questions and two of their hypotheses were not supported at all through the research. 59% of the subjects were female, while 41% were male. H5: Adolescents subjected to prolonged exposure to talk show content about lesbian or gay male relationships/transsexuality/tattooed persons will express less restrictive attitudes toward other issues than adolescents in the control group. Conclusion This study was presented very neatly and professionally. Heuristic Value I believe that the study did an average job with their methods and that they did leave room for further research in this area. As a consequence, the research hypotheses that were tested are as follows: H1: Adolescents subjected to prolonged exposure to talk show content about lesbian or gay male relationships/transsexuality/tattooed persons will overestimate the number of these persons in society more than a control group. In all discussions nearly all participants expressed understanding or support at lesbian, gays, transsexuals, and those who practice body piercing and tattooing. Thus the perception of talk show content may influence their assessment of reality compared with adolescents who are shown the talk show material. This study tested children from a different country and was not close-minded when it came to conducting its research. The researchers did a fantastic job of providing the reader with a sense of what was going on at the time of the study and also how the study was being given. Validity The authors provided an adequate explanation of their data and made it easy to follow along with. This study was very general and it seemed as if they were trying hard to not deal with specific issues. The next study or research to come out on this subject could benefit from trying to tie these two areas of television together and see what outcome comes about. For all issues discussed the respondents in the experiments group displayed a significantly less restrictive attitude.
