Give Them More Money

Student-athletes should be paid for there extra time and work invested in their college. Colleges have profited off of these student-athletes for many years. The student-athletes have made too many sacrifices not to be rewarded financially. The 466-page NCAA rulebook on scholarship student-athletes is very confusing. Much of this rulebook is not set rules, but left up to the NCAA's board to determine whether it has been broken. One example, a student is not allowed to go out to eat with a booster, but if this booster has the food delivered to his house, the student can eat there with h


The issue of exploitation of student-athletes is not a new one, but the question that remains unanswered is, how much longer until the issue is resolved? The answer is not simple, but attainable. Colleges have also profited off of personalized merchandise with the student-athletes name or number. CBS paid the NCAA 6 billion dollars for the right to broadcast the men's basketball tournament for the next eleven years. The NCAA should institute an hourly pay scale. The University of Michigan holds over one hundred thousand seats in their football stadium and charges in upwards of fifty dollars a ticket. Athletes should have a minimum wage that increases with school grades and level of college. Times have changed; student-athletes have now become athlete-students. This should also include bonuses for any extra play due too tournaments and championships. Student-athletes are also not allowed to make over a certain amount of money on an outside job, while a conventional student on scholarship can make whatever they can. Even if this was changed, student-athletes can put in over 90 hours a week, with practice, travel, games and a full class load. Over seven million fans attended men's basketball and football games annually. One school was put on probation for five years for this violation, resulting in loss of revenue from televised broadcasts and recruiting. ABC and ESPN pay 100 million annually to broadcast the Bowl Championship Series in football. Colleges have profited off of these students for years.
