Prisoners of War

A prisoner of war is a captured person from a warring country's armed forces. Sometimes they surrender, or are taken by force. Many Conventions have been held to establish the rights of prisoners of war. The Geneva Convention of 1929, after World War I, was signed and ratified by 48 countries. Japan signed but did not ratify this agreement until January of 1942. It noted many ways of how prisoners of war should be treated. Some were, prisoners should not be in solitary confinement, the food served to prisoners should be as good as the food the detaining troops had, officers had to be paid the same amount as the detaining officers, force could not be used to get military information and prisoners of war could be put to work, but not in work related to the war effort.Both the Allies and the Axis powers mistreated many prisoners of war during World War II. Many instances of atrocity have been well documented. The Germans gunned down 100 American prisoners at the Malmedy Massacre during the Battle of the Bulge. The Japanese were very brutal at the Bataan Death March, where American and Philippine prisoners were executed, beaten, and starved without reason, causing more than 5,000 deaths.
