Evolution of Journalism

When comparing traditional news media to Internet news, interactivity is the key differential between these two forms. Interaction allows the reader to participate and contribute to the news text. This interactivity occurs every time a reader contributes to discussion boards, sends an email to the editor, or clicks their way through the vast number of news articles and news websites.Today, news organizations are observing the critical role interactivity plays in on-line journalism. The objective is no longer text, but rather providing the reader with hypertext; a presentation of the news story with related links, multimedia links, images navigation menus, and source documents. On-line journalism allows readers to obtain news from unique sources other than their local newspaper or the evening news. This gives the reader distinctive perspectives on current events. Also, unlike the typical newspaper, the Web's newspaper are constantly being updated giving the reader's breaking news as it happens. Established mediums such as television or the daily newspaper lack these conventions that can be found in on-line news sources

A comparable notion is functional amongst the Internet's bloggers. Not only can blogs present news from a personal perspective, but also can rebut stories published on news sites. Bloggers with exceptional HTML skills, design their web blogs to their heart's desire. However, blogs do not identify themselves as the means of communication on the Internet. Gasher's primary point of the "indexicality of the World Wide Web" (2002) applies to the main ingredient of a blog. For a blogger, the palette of ideas has infinite amount of possibilities and no limitations. As news websites are organized to visually stimulate the surfer through links, sidebars, video and audio bytes; same principles are relevant to the structure of a web log. With the use of a search engine, bloggers can reveal errors made by journalists and distribute the correction through their website. Bloggers frequently visit numerous news pages and link alluring articles back to their website. While news site's links to enhance or to further explain the article, a blog's links serve to comment on the news or the further persuade the reader into the author's claims. With the vast amount of news sites, it is nearly impossible for a surfer to sort through all of them. By publicizing their email address, bloggers permit their readers to join the "conversation". Blogging is a relatively new form of way dispersing information and news in a manner that make it more fun and thus far, entertaining (Grohol, "Psychology of Blogging". The blogging trend is flourishing because it gives any individual the authority to produce and distribute research, creative freedom, and presenting the story from one's own view (Lasica, "A New Source of News"). Equally, news websites and web logs can be updated at any period of time.
