Values

             It has always amazed me that two children from the same family, same influences and same upbringing can have such different values. I have found this to be true most of the time. It is not that one child has a bad value system and the other good – just different. Why? The parents teach the same values, yet the children end up with values that are different from each other. This has come to my attention because it has definitely happened in my own family.
             I had a lot of responsibility on my head at a very young age. My mother worked tweo and sometimes three jobs at various times to support the four of us children. That meant that I Had to help raise my two younger sisters and brother. I took to the responsibility well. I made sure my siblings were clean and fed and off to school every morning. In the evening I made sure they did their homework and chores before going out to play. I made sure they had their dinner and baths before making sure they were in bed at the proper time. Even after my mother did not need for me to do this any longer my sisters still came to me for permission to go anywhere or do something.
             I respect my mother a great deal. She worked so hard because of her love and devotion to the family. She never took welfare or charity. Of course, as I grew older, I resented her to some degree for the freedom I was losing, but maturity also brought the realization of the sacrifices my mother made for us children.
             My youngest sister had to endure some of the responsibilities I had to endure at a very young age also. Lynn, my younger sister, fended for herself. Lynn grew up fast. She married and had a daughter. She ended up like mother and had to take care of herself and her child. Mother would not take the responsibility of Lynn and her child.
