The Sultanate of the Ottoman Empire 1512-1574 A.D.

The Sultanate of the Ottoman Empire 1512-1574 A.D. The Ottoman Empire was a long-lived empire, which once included territories in North Africa, the Middle East, Asia Minor, central Asia, and central and Eastern Europe. One man, the sultan, ruled all of the Ottoman Empire. Sultans of the Ottoman Empire had absolute power over everything in the empire. During the sixteenth century Selim I, Suleyman I, and Selim II reigned. These three men changed the empire in very different ways during their reigns as sultan. Selim I was the ninth sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He ruled from 1512 until 1520 A.D. During his years as Sultan he acquired the nickname, Yavuz, which can be translated from Turkish into English as "The Grim." Selim I forced his father's abdication in 1512. Then he managed to convince the highly trained Janissaries, or highly specialized armed forces, to support him and crush his brother, Ahmed. In April of 1512, Selim I led the Janissaries to Istanbul where they poisoned Bayezid, his father, and executed Ahmad, his brother. The great Ottoman Empire, along with the great Caliphate that had once that stood against advancing expansion from Europe, slowly crumbled away to a fragment of what it once was. ("Selim I" Online) In response to the crushing defeat of the Memelukes, the guardian of the Islamic holy cities (Mecca and Medina) sent Selim I the keys to Cairo's sacred Muslim shrines. ("Suleyman the Magnificent" Online)Suleyman focused on adding wealth and new land to the empire. ("Selim I" Online)During the last year of his reign, Selim I planned to invade Rhodes. Selim II reigned for only eight years. Sokolli conquered Cyprus and Venice and recovered Tunis from Spain. Although the empire continued to thrive for approximately a hundred years after his death, this period was the start of a very, very long decline. With the defeat of the Mamelukes behind him, Selim I became a very popular Sultan. ("Selim I" Online) The successor to Selim I was his son Suleyman I (also Suleyman I) the Lawgiver, or the Magnificent. He was addicted to the pursuit of personal pleasures.
