Giovanni

The importance of place in James Baldwin's novel, Giovanni's Room can be interpreted in many different ways. For most of the novel, David is in Paris France. While some consider Paris the "City of Love" David is unable to experience love, and this may have been a reason that David chose Paris as the city he would 'find himself' or possibly find love in. (Also, the writer inserted bits of French -which most Americans associate as the "language of love"- into the story line it leads even the readers who don't understand a bit of French, to think that whatever they are saying must at the very least sound beautiful.) David originally traveled to Paris to run away from the memory of his first homosexual relationship with a childhood friend, Joey. "There is something fantastic in the spectacle I now present to myself of having run so far, so hard, across the ocean even, only to find myself brought up short once more before the bulldog in my own backyard-the yard, in the meantime, having grown smaller and the bulldog bigger." (6) David wanted to believe that he was a man of some significance, while without the ability to escape his true identity and become the man he believed he wanted to be, his fight was hopeless.

goes to collect information on his brother's life, he really is merging Sebastian's identity with his own. The dirty clothes that were thrown about could symbolize his 'dirty' actions in that room with Giovanni, and the broken glasses that were often in the room could symbolize how his life was breaking apart in sharp, piercing ways The real life of Sebastian Knight by Vladimir Nabokov is also a novel where place and identity play an important role. They demonstrate total isolation and inclusion during David's period of finding himself. For example, when David goes to Paris, he comes to the realization that he is in fact a bisexual, and that his relationship with Joey was significant. As a bisexual expatriate I could imagine it would be hard to identify with anyone else on similar grounds, thus David must have felt totally isolated by his identity and the room (mentally and physically) that Giovanni had kept him in for so long. What he lacked in schooling and experience, he made up for in his attempt to research. This prompted what was left of their family to move away from Russia. Regardless of the reason Hella went to Spain, it is still an important part of the novel and it associates a place with finding her identity. Alone, a brick wall can symbolize trouble, isolation, or a big obstacle. Also the mental room that David is in is metaphorically mentioned in the room with many small details. It is interesting to note how the main characters are both searching for something and by the different places they go, they discover more and more about themselves. ation in Spain is worthy of some attention.
