             çAnthrax: Before and After the Attacks
             You wake up early for work and kiss your family goodbye. During your daily routine, you see a man drop a glass vial in the subway; or you open a pile of mail at the office and a white powdery substance falls out of a letter. You have just become a statistic of bioterrorism.
             One form of bioterrorism, anthrax, has been a debated subject for many years. Recently, we found out how dangerous this disease can be. This paper will state the history of anthrax, give the opinion of Dr. Gary Novak before the September 11 attacks, state factual information and recent developments with anthrax, and tell how to protect yourself from anthrax.
             The United States Army has been conducting an ongoing servic ge of experiments with anthrax since 1942. Some of the experiments were being conducted in cooperation with scientists from the Canadian military. However, this production was slow and caused many problems.(Bill)
             In 1943, Dr Ira Baldwin was hired to direct research at a newly opened facility in Frederick. Dr. Baldwin and his scientists were not very enthusiastic about using anthrax as a weapon. Dr. Baldwin left the vast majority of the research to a British bacteriologist, Lord Trevor Stamp.(Bill)
             In 1944, Camp Derrick engaged in a full-blown anthrax weapons program. This was due to Lord StampÕs skillful work and advocacy. The results were the cultivation of large amounts of
             anthrax spores and several hundred anthrax cluster bombs at the Maryland facility.(Bill)
             In 1979, there was a deadly outbreak of anthrax in Russia. The Russian government s *aid that this was caused by people eating infected meats. The United States felt that this was highly unlikely due to the unconfirmed reports that thousands fell ill with this disease, and this would not have happened with just some infected meat.
