Freud on Dracula

             Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, once referred to Bram Stoker's "Dracula" as an exploration into "the return of the repressed". The novel is about a man who comes to Count Dracula's house to conduct business matters. Dracula traps Jonathon, the man who conducted business matters. As he escapes from the house his wife's friend, Lucy, dies, and is later seen biting little kids. As people begin to notice that Dracula is a vampire, they have to kill him and the people he has possessed. They use crucifixes and stakes to kill the vampires. The repression comes from three main points; Dracula stands for pure evil, he is against the fact of doing what is best for others, and the how Dracula's blood drinking is connected to wanting sexual pleasure. The idea of evil is repressed, but
             Dracula's actions show how not only him but also other evils are repressed then return from repression. It is obvious that Dracula stands for pure evil, a supernatural being; an exact opposite of the Jesus Christ symbol. In the biblical world people use the cross as a sign of protection from the Satan like figures in Hell. As well as the famous devil figure often proclaimed as being so hideous and evil that if a mortal human saw him he would die of fright. Jonathon, the visitor of Dracula's house, explained to us in his journals that Dracula has sharp teeth and claw like fingernails; mostly associated with the idea of danger and death. People try to repress the idea of death because of the human instinct to live. Hell is more associated with death more than Heaven because Hell goes against the human nature to survive, but Heaven stands for everything that is good. Since Heaven was "created" by humans, Heaven can grant you the ability to live again, but Hell wants you to die so you feel miserable. Evil is repressed because humans don't want to feel miserable.
