Paradise Lost

Satan's speech in Paradise Lost has many characteristics of a common epic speech. Epic speeches begin by naming the person or persons being addressed by the speaker. Satan calls out with a boomingly loud voice to all of his fallen comrades and calls them out referring to them as "Princes, Potentates, Warriors..." showing the great deal of respect he has for his fellow rebellious and fallen angels. Satan's

He shows defiance in that he acts as if he's content with hell and says it is freedom. This attitude is taken quite well by his following former angels in that they see his confidence and believe in his persistence to achieve victory. whole point of his speech to his fallen infantrymen is to conjure up some sense of hope within their downtrodden spirits. He urges them to "awake, arise, or be forever fallen!" This concludes Satan's speech and is the most powerful of statements within the speech and is indeed quite successful in lifting the spirits of his fallen angels and thrusting hope back into their minds. Satan uses epithets, commonly used in standard epic speeches, in referring to the fallen angels as "the Flower of Heaven" and calling God "the Conqueror. This speech shows his great leadership and commander-like qualities to always show his men an optimistic outlook on their situation no matter what the circumstance. " He also utilizes elevated language with allusions to "Cherub and Seraph rolling in the flood with scattered arms and ensigns. " Satan knows how to get his "men" to gain hope and courage and rise again to challenge the Almighty by challenging them and threatening their courage asking in a challenging tone if they would rather surrender their cause and challenge God no further.
