Terrorism
In the early morning hours of September 11, 2001, hijackers from the terrorist group al-Qaeda took control of four United States airplanes. Two of them brought down the Twin Towers in New York City. One of them severely damaged the Pentagon building in Washington D.C. The fourth plane crashed into an empty field in Pennsylvania after passengers on board fought the terrorists. Thousands of innocent Americans died. On July 27, 1996, a pipe bomb exploded at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, Georgia during the Olympic games. Two people died and others suffered severe injuries. These are just two of the many examples of terrorism. The government and the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) are in agreement that there is no true definition to the term "terrorism." However, in the Code of Federal Regulations, it is defined as, "the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives." (28 C.F.R. Section 0.85). The FBI goes further in defining terrorism by breaking it down into two main types: domestic or international. Domestic terrorism is the unlawful use or threatened use
I don't believe that terrorism will ever fully go away. We have created a global village without a police department. This is an attack against agriculture, livestock, or other food supplies with chemical or biological weapons. It's comparable to the war on drugs. If a nuclear weapon was detonated in the upper atmosphere, it would create a powerful electromagnetic pulse, similar to an extremely high energy radio wave. Information warfare extends the battlefield to incorporate all of society. Many drug rings are associated with terrorism and a large portion of the drug money gets turned over to terrorist cells. According to the United States counter-terrorism policy, the FBI considers terrorists to be criminals. Between 1980 and 1989, a total of 267 incidents or suspected incidents occurred. The FBI has released some alarming statistics on terrorism. - Between 1980 and 1999, domestic terrorism claimed the lives of 205 people and injured over 2,037. Such efforts include the 2001 addition of the Office of Homeland Security. International terrorist acts serve various purposes. - Between 1980 and 1999, there were 232 civilian commercial targets, 101 government targets, 61 diplomatic foreign government targets, 13 military targets, and 7 unknown targets.
