Account for the Increasing support of the Nazis 1923-1936
There are several factors that account for the increasing support of the National Socialist German Worker's Party (NSDAP) among the German people in the period 1923 to 1936. The main factors that account for this increasing trend are the failure of the Weimar government, the economic instability of the period, the propaganda and terror produced by the NSDAP, and Hitler's coming to power. It is these factors that must be accounted for in order to understand the reasons as to why NSDAP support increased during the period 1923 to 1936. The failure of the Weimar government was a major factor for the increasing support for the NSDAP. The Weimar Government gave the German people a new opportunity to participate in the political process. However the Weimar Government's failure was due to this fact. The voting system that was set up, that of proportional representation, allowed for the inclusion of many small parties in the Reichstag. This meant that no single party ever had an overall majority in the Reichstag and therefore co-operation of parties in coalition governments was needed in order for democracy to work in Germany. When the co-operation of the parties fell apart, when Muller and Bruning had a falling out over cuts in
Hindenburg appointed Hitler Chancellor on 21 March 1933. The German people saw that democracy was failing and that the only hope was in that of the extremes of the NSDAP and it is for this reason that the failure of the Weimar Government can be considered as a major factor to the increased support of the NSDAP during the period 1923 to 1936. This meant laws could be issued under emergency powers rather then go through the Reichstag. It is for all these specific economic reasons that NSDAP support increased from 1923 to 1936 as the NSDAP party became more attractive from the aftermath of crises and also the fear of communism. As well as using propaganda as a tool to attract more support for the NSDAP, the NSDAP also used terror to influence the population's support of the party. From this law the NSDAP had now successfully ridded itself of all political opposition and thus gained the support of the majority of the German population. Bruning tried to keep his government going without a majority in the Reichstag by asking the President, Paul Von Hindenburg, to use Article 48 of the Constitution. Hindenburg wished to gain the support of the NSDAP but also thought that he could control Hitler, he was mistaken. unemployment benefits, the slide towards dictatorship began as Bruning and the Center party found themselves in government alone. Large numbers of the cautious middle class were devastated by the hyperinflation, as were pensioners and retirees. The situation became more serious in 1932 and 1933 when Bruning was replaced as Chancellor by, von Papen and von Schleicher, who were not attached to any party but who wanted to end democracy in the Republic. The farming community also fell on hard times affected by a worldwide agricultural depression. It is therefore seen that Hitler's coming to power and his actions after have a significant role in the reasons as to why the support for the NSDAP increased from 1923 to 1936. The NSDAP targeted already seeded views in the German population such as anti-Semitism. It was the fact that the NSDAP appealed to the whole nation, on issues which concerned everyone and it also appealed to sectors of the population, on issues which affected them separately as well as the efforts to secure it's support in the form of propaganda, terror and dictatorship that accounts for the increased support of the NSDAP during the period 1923 to 1936.
