Roles of Women in Hamlet

To what extent do you consider the female roles in the play to be subservient to the male roles?Women are represented in this tragedy, but on first analysis seem to be drowned in the mist of the deceitful power-game played out by a number of male figures, who in one way or another contribute to the on-going plot of murder, treachery, revenge and betrayal. The title of the play within a play, 'the mouse-trap' could apply to whole of 'Hamlet'. Is it set in a very political patriarchal society, which is dominated by the authoritive action of the male characters? 'Hamlet' is widely seen as a play where the female characters have small and seemingly unimportant roles, which portray them as extremely weak passive and subservient. The reader can only question if Shakespeare really invites the audience to perceive this apparent difference with which the gender roles have been depicted? Shakespeare lived and wrote in a time when one successful and powerful person, a woman known as Elizabeth 1, ruled England. Previously a lot of Shakespearian critics have underestimated the role of women in 'Hamlet', who appear to play little part in the storyline, as they make no direct action. However on deeper analysis we see how Shakespeare make

However, if as Branagh implied, Ophelia has already engaged in sexual relations with Hamlet, she has broken out of the proscribed rules. The motif of incest runs throughout the play most obviously shown in Gertrude and Claudius's relationship, the former brother-in-law married to his former sister-in-law. Being fully aware of this Elizabeth 1 adopted the 'virgin queen' identity, whilst Gertrude remarried. He is clearly besotted and over run by emotions towards his mother. Gertrude on the surface can be perceived as women with no morality or conscience as she remarried before the Old King was even 'two months dead'. He believes that Hamlet's madness is a result of his stopping their communication, so secretly arranges and listens to meeting between Ophelia and Hamlet to gain information. However on deeper analysis we see a sly cunning side to his character, revealed with his relationship with his children. He condemns and question's Ophelia, ordering her not to have any contact with Hamlet. Gertrude, certainly displays discomfort in Ophelia's presence seen when she says ' I will not speak with her'. Gertrude's hasty decision to remarry may have been to secure her place as future queen? Claudius refers to Gertrude as 'our jointess imperial to his warlike state'. However we see that when this system is broken it affects her ability to function. Ophelia is now 'in between', she is not a daughter, wife or virgin. Gertrude aware or unaware is the driving force of Hamlet's actions and the reason for Claudius's bold action of murdering his brother.
