Mice and Men

             Imagine running from city to city, living in despair, but still believing that dreams do come true to those who wait. Well, that happened to two middle-aged men, Lennie and George in the story "Of Mice and Men" by John Stienbeck. They both have a dream to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own, until disaster strikes. The killing of Lennie and of Candy's dog were both mercy killings because they were both going to be saved from further pain and torment.
             The killing of Lennie associates with him being mentally and socially challenged. He doesn't have a mental disability, he's just feebleminded. It is like he has the body of a thirty-five year old man, with the mind of a child. He does what he wants and doesn't think twice. One significant thing about Lennie, is he absolutely loves to pet and touch soft things such as silky hair, small animals fur, and velvet. Wanting to touch these things end up getting Lennie in trouble through out the story. For example, in the beginning, Lennie and George are running from a place called Weed because of Lennies curiosity. You see, this young girl was wearing a red dress and Lennie wanted to touch it, so when he did, the girl tried to get away and Lennie wouldn't let go. Because of Lennies interest, he got into trouble.
             The killing of Candy's dog resulted because he was getting too old. Candy was a tall, stoop-shouldered old man who's job was using a big push-broom because he hurt his right hand. Candy worked on the plantation with the others and his dog followed him everywhere. (It was a really old dog.) One night as the guy's were starting a card game Carlson yelled back at Candy a few bunks back, "God awmighty, that dog stinks.....He ain't no good to you, he ain't no good to himself.
