The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is an organization that was set up to help with many aspects pertaining to Multiple Sclerosis. The NMSS does many things to assist people who have or know others who have the disease. The Society helps to give people information about the disease, how to live a normal life while dealing with MS, and how to get help medically, financially, and emotionally. The MS Society helps out in every way possible, providing education about the disease, support for the people with the disease, and special equipment and transportation, among many other things. They also set up many events to raise money to help find a cure for the devastating disease. MS is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system. When a person has Multiple Sclerosis, myelin, which is what surrounds nerve fibers and is necessary for nerves to send signals, is destroyed. Cells and proteins that are supposed to protect the body against infections leave the blood vessels and transfer into the brain and spinal cord, destroying myelin. The NMSS came about when Sylvia Lawry's brother was diagnosed with MS. That is when she decided to start the Association for Advancement of Research in Multiple Sclerosis in 1946, later becoming the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in 1947. Not only is MS taken seriously in the United States, many member societies were created all over the world. They realize that the family and friends of the patients also need support while dealing with the emotions they have after learning a loved one has become ill. Sylvia Lawry worked throughout her entire life to end the devastating effects of MS. In the case of MS, the cells that make myelin are destroyed. One theory is that a viral infection along with an inherited genetic susceptibility causes the disease. They cannot do the same things anymore. Although the cause of MS is not known there are many theories, some of them very possible. The MS Society's main focus, of course, is the group of people who are inflicted with MS. With the NMSS, the government has actually started to pay attention to the disease instead of just ignoring the effects of MS. The MS Society is successful because there are many people who are willing to help such an important cause. The Society also sets up fundraisers that will help raise money to assist in the search for a cure. The NMSS is a positive influence in society.
