Hamlet

In the play of Hamlet by William Shakespeare, there are three men of action all with the same dilemma. Fortinbras and Laertes are similar characters to Hamlet. All three of them want to avenge their father's death; however, they each take different courses on their way to doing so. This is the main variation between the characters how they handle their misfortune and how they get revenge on their father's murderer. The main character Hamlet, after learning that his father's death was a murder and promising to take revenge, waits and makes sure that what he knows is the absolute truth before he even attempts to take revenge on Claudius. Hamlet is very private with his grief. His sadness is long and after two months after his father's death, he still wears "suits of solemn black." Even though his mother remarried to his uncle so quickly, he does not suspect anything of his father's murder until the ghost tells him. Hamlet thinks over what he is to do, and how he is to avenge the murder of his father. But that does not mean that he cannot act on impulse. When he and Laertes fight over Ophelia's grave, it shows how much Hamlet can act impulsively. He forms this elaborate scheme in which Hamlet ha

He wants revenge and he wants it immediately. Laertes is decisive and Hamlet is not. He is the son of the King of Norway, also named Fortinbras, who was killed in a battle against King Hamlet. (Act V Scene ii 404-412) Fortinbras, although with a small part of the play, represents the only logical person of action. This flaw becomes fatal and if he had acted right away, many killings could have been prevented. Rightly to be great/Is not to stir without great argument,/But greatly to find quarrel in a straw/When honour's at the stake. Fortinbras is somewhere between them. He tells the king that he will hit him now but just before he hits Hamlet with the poisoned sword, he whispered to himself, "And yet 'tis almost 'gainst my conscience. Fortinbras wants to avenge his father's death just as Laertes and Hamlet do but he acts rationally. When brought to the call of avenging their father's deaths, Laertes is fast to act. Hamlet and Laertes represent two opposite extremes of action, procrastinated and immediate. Laertes is similar to Hamlet in man ways. It is evident that Fortinbras has much respect for Hamlet because he gives the order for hamlet to have a soldier's burial. After seeing Claudius's awkward response to the play and him storming out, Hamlet has enough confirmation that his uncle is truly the killer and Hamlet promises he will not procrastinate any longer.
