Brutus
The play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare is mainly based around the assassination of Julius Caesar. The character in charge of the assassination was the play's tragic hero, Marcus Brutus. Brutus was a highly respected figure in Rome. He was a loyal follower and devout friend to Caesar. This seems kind of ironic because why would someone murder one of his good friends. Marcus Brutus is a very complex character. In my paper, I will examine Brutus and attempt to gain a deeper understanding of his character. Before, you can understand the actions of Brutus you must take a closer look at his character. I believe that Brutus was overall, a good person. His involvement in the assassination was not out of hate or envy like so many of the other conspirators. He was very sincere and pure in most of actions. Brutus truly believed that the assassination of Julius Caesar was for the good of Rome. That is the only reason why he decided to join the conspirators. Brutus's part in the assassination was not out of envy or hate because all of the other conspirators wanted to kill Marc Antony as well. Brutus was the one who persuaded them not to. This is apparent in the line where Brutus says, " For Antony is but a limb of Caesar
Brutus loved him but cared for the people of Rome much more than his love for Caesar. Brutus does possess some traits that are detrimental to himself and the rest of the conspirators. Brutus finds Caesar's desire of pride disgusting, but he has his own problems with pride. He decided to risk everything there. Caesar could even be considered a tyrant to some degree. Brutus's rigid idealism is both his most deadly flaw and his greatest virtue. It seemed like he would always disguise the true cause of his actions with a very noble cause like promoting the Roman republic. They do not like Caesar and want him removed from power. He is not morally corrupt, unlike most of the conspirators. It is very difficult to understand the true meanings of his actions and everything he says. Caesar thought of himself as being almighty and perfect in nearly every way. He felt that Caesar was becoming too strong. He lives his life as the noblest of Romans. Before he spoke, the crowd believed in the conspirators' cause. He says that he cannot raise money by vile means.
