Globilization of MTV
No longer do you have to be in America to watch some of your favorite MTV shows. You can now be in Asia and be in time to watch Punk'd. Not only that, but even hip-hop music is receiving global attention. Western culture have been dominating globally so much that there are 6,000 Starbucks across the globe (Andrzejczyk). This type of influence characterizes the dominance of western consumer culture. Countries who are becoming more of a consumer culture have had its negative side effects. People in other countries did not ever have to pay for as much money as they did before Starbucks put local businesses bankrupt. Even local stores and markets are now in danger of going out of business now in Mexico because of Wal-Mart's super store that was established. Credit card debts are continuously accumulating since it has been around in South Korea. But what about MTV's entertainment that they are providing and hip-hop music; do they pose negative effects in other countries because of the influences of the western world? Despite the negative effects of westernization, I believe that the globalization of MTV and hip-hop music is doing more good than harm? MTV is now touching the screens all across Asia. Its arrival in 1992 has
The government "began giving funds and other support" that lead to other events such as clubs and performances (Robinson). It expresses the celebration and struggles of everyday life. Because there was no group who could afford to buy equipment for concerts, officials sponsored the groups. Now some traditional values of the Indonesian culture will have a stronger outlook for the future to remain alive and hopefully continue to be passed on to generation after generation with pride. Music is the reflection of oneself and what we hear may be the reflection of the individual or maybe something bigger, the world. Who is at fault, the individual or western music and what it influences? Western music and music entertainment has been criticized to having materialistic ideals. More local programming also means more local jobs, which isn't bad for the economy. Asian countries have never had a 24-hour music channel before, so it fascinated many viewers tuning in the first time. Hip-hop has been transformed into many forms and has been appreciated nationwide and recognized worldwide. There is a win-win situation here where ratings are increasing and the local people see more of what they want. Local videos are increasing in popularity and as this rises, more airtime is given that allows for budget expanding. Even the government is recognizing hip-hop. As Cuban hip-hoppers continue to strive for change, the fans aren't the only people who are listening. MTV has created a new market in Asia that is expanding as local programming increases. I'm sure if a local program is popular enough with ratings, it will receive more airtime.
