The idea of democracy improved during the Jacksonian period in several ways, with the help of Andrew Jackson, nationalism, and industrialism. Several ways that Andrew Jackson used his power to improve the democracy were expanding voting rights, destroying banks, and developing the spoils system. The qualification was now open to the common men; more adult white males were eligible to vote than ever before. Jackson wanted the participation of the common man; he wanted to show that he cared for the people and that he wasn't just another high-class man that only looks out for his class, aristocracy. Jackson's loyalty and interest in the people enabled the people to develop trust, "as nationalist feelings spread, people placed more of their loyalty with the federal government and less with state government" (Dibacco 199). Lyceums brought interested adults to hear celebrities and reformers lecture on topics of the day. Even though women still had little position and power to most things, it was still a big step in improving America's democracy. Before industrialism era had started, messages and everything were sent through snail mail. Jackson's actions gave the citizens hope that the term "equality" can truly be achieve, the people thanked him by rewarding him with a second presidency. Nationalism also awakened the people, making them more aware of what was going on since they wanted the best for their government. During this time, transportation improved greatly, enabling the people to transport from one place to another faster, a great contribution to a better communication and interaction. "The nation believed that democracy was its destiny and its strength" (Dibacco 215). Nationalism was an idea developed before the Jacksonian era, but the idea was also a benefactor to the improvement of democracy during the Jacksonian era.
