Windshield Manufacturing
We have become habituated to having a windshield in front of us when we drive, but try driving without one and it would be one of your worst experiences. It is true that windshields serve as a protection for the passengers from outside elements, for example wind, rain, snow, road debris, etc, but with millions of cars on the road, the windshield has also become a life saving element for passengers when they are involved in an accident, or collision with an object. The manufacturing process of glass begins with the mixing of the specified ingredients. Once the ingredients are ready the float manufacturing process can begin. It consists of different furnaces, in which the molten glass travels until it is cooled near the final steps were it emerges as solid flat glass. At this point the glass is referred to as annealed glass. Having completed this first process the glass is still not ready to be installed on automobiles. This is because it is too fragile and breaks under low pressure. Also if fractured it breaks into sharp edges with could be fatal in a car crash. Therefore the final step of the process involves improving its strength and making it safer when fractured.
Sag BendingIn order to acquire the desired curvature of the windshield, a process called sag bending is used. The process used in the manufacturing of flat glass is called "Float glass". It cools slowly in order to reduce internal stresses and avoid breaking of the glass. Heat and pressure are used to allow the parts to bond together. New safety concerns will arise and new advances in glass usage will certainly be something to look forward in the future. Glass objects dating as old as 3,000 BC have also been found in Egypt. Towards the end of the tunnel the glass comes out at ambient temperature. I have included here a drawing of the machine used for float glass process. To get a good idea of windshield manufacturing I have provided the following flow chart, which illustrates the different steps involved in windshield manufacturingFloat Glass Manufacturing ProcessThe first thing we have to consider in this process is the ingredients to be used. Surprisingly these glasses have compositions very similar to those of modern soda lime silicate glass. Once the materials melt they flow into the furnace and it is kept here at a high temperature in order to remove any air bubbles. Using the numbers as a reference I will explain each part of the process:1) Charging of raw MaterialsThis is the initial step of the process. There are many car manufacturers and each one of them has a wide variety of models. Windshield Manufacturing There are many kinds of glasses and many ways to manufacture them. 2) Melting in the FurnaceIt's a wide tank (oil and gas powered) made of refractory materials and it holds 2,000 tonnes of molten glass at a temperature of 1500 C.
