Lewis and Clark essay

In May 1804, Lewis and Clark went through manychallenges on their expedition that today, in thetwenty-first century, would never have been thoughtabout. Technology today would have been a big help forthe two frontiersmen. Another factor that held theexpedition down was there means of transportation.Although the expedition was indeed a success, manyadvancements of this century would have helped themany hardships they faced while trying to explore theAmerican West and the Pacific Northwest. Today, computers track almost every means oftransportation. If anyone today was to go on anexpedition like Lewis and Clark did, the whole thingwould be mapped out by computers. This 8000 mile

The many disadvantages cost the group of 45men much time and effort that could have been cut downif they had had speedy transportation and betterknowledge of the land. Lewis and Clarks expedition took almost two and a halfyears to complete. The men on this expedition traveled acrossthe plains for many years before finally reaching, tracking, and journalizing the whole thing. If thistrip was set up for today, it could probably becompleted in one week which would give the explorersmore time to research there animal specimens, animalbones and pelts, and the various soil and mineralsamples. In conclusion, Lewis and Clark returned as heroes, accomplishing many important tasks that expandedliving areas in the Louisiana Territory. Today, a trip like the one Lewisand Clark ventured on would be routine, but in May of1804, it was the beginning of a whole new world. When the men werefaced with the situation of tracking over the RockyMountains, Sacagawea gave the men horses that couldhave cost them their lives because of the snow. Even thoughthis expedition would have been much easier if it hadbeen taken on during this century because thetechnology and transportation would have shortened thetrip in many ways. Many situations, such as getting off course, finding the nearest water supply, places to stay forthe night, and the problems with mosquito's all couldhave been solved by the power of a computer or a callfrom a cell phone. Transportation in the 1800'sincluded walking, and mainly horses. While exploring this land, the mean walkedmany miles. Although their French-Canadian furtraders wife, Sacagawea, was proven invaluable to theexpedition, today she would be almost useless becauseher main succession was finding needed supplies atcritical moments. Today, planes can take you any place in the world and back inone day. These manysituations that could have easily been fixed today, could have ruined Lewis and Clarks expedition whichwould have lessened expansion into Texas and theSouthwest. On any expedition today, helicopterswould be able to fly in any needed supplies in a shortperiod of time including transportation.
