To His Coy Mistress
In "To His Coy Mistress", Andrew Marvell presents a speaker who appeals to his lover through persuasion. In the first part of the poem the speaker appeals to the character, in the second part he expresses his emotions, and in the third part the speaker uses reason. By using different methods of appeal, the speaker hopes to win his mistress love. In line 7 through 10 of the poem the speaker confesses his love for his mistress by saying he would love her from time's beginning to time's end. The speaker's "love should grow vaster than empires" (11-12), and he would adore her for thousands of years (13-18). Later on in the poem the speaker uses images associated with death, and he offers a plan by which the two should live,
Once he noticed she was interested in conversation he continued and started telling this female about himself, stating that he worked for a major record label, he drives a expensive vehicle etc. Then John concluded the conversation by telling her he wants to take her out, and then they exchanged telephone numbers. The other day when I and my friend John was on our way to class I witnessed him befriend a female. If one was in the day and time of "To His Coy Mistress" this method would have been considered the method of persuasion, but in 2003 this method is considered "Game". Basically he tries to persuade his mistress into spending the rest of her life with him. Towards the ending of the day John and I were standing in the lobby of BMCC, when she walked right by him and didn't say a word. The method of persuasion is mainly use amongst males when in contact with the female gender. John started bragging, stating that he told her that he was watching her for a long time, and really wants to get to know her and that she agreed to go out with him on Saturday. The word "game" can be define as persuasion, convincing, lying, but its only considered lying if one gets caught. knowing that one does not live forever. In conclusion, the speaker in "To His Coy Mistress" appealed to his lover through persuasion and John used the same method of persuasion to gain this female trust. In this day and age one can relate to this poem. As he approached these words was uttered "Hello, how are you doing?" and of course she responded "fine". When he came to school the next day, I asked about his conversation with this female.
