The realisation of the importance of embracing ecommerce is evident through the Caribbean Ecommerce initiative spearheaded by the Caribbean Export Development Agency which has launched an ecommerce platform that makes it easy for governmental agencies and trade groups to form integrated marketplaces and for companies of any size to sell through those marketplaces and their own websites. It minimises traditional boundaries of time and geography and makes possible the creation of virtual communities of suppliers and customers. In the face of the rapidly changing environment as a result of globalisation existing businesses in the Caribbean must realise the increasing need to remove themselves from the traditional forms of business and embrace the new technology of e-commerce. However, this new marketplace has numerous opportunities as well as threats for the Caribbean. It is said that ecommerce will be to the Information Revolution what the railroad was to the Industrial Revolution. " This definition of ecommerce includes the exchange of business information that may or may not relate to the purchase or sale of goods. Information technology and the Internet are reengineering business processes on a large scale. "Ecommerce is the use of information technology and electronic communication networks to exchange business information and conduct transactions in electronic paperless form. In today's competitive environment, the Caribbean is being pushed to improve their existing business process.
