Women in the Media

Advertisements have played a major role in practically everyone's life, besides anyone who has no access to television or any type of print material. Advertising is a major factor in whether a product will sell and gives consumers a reason to buy their product. Many advertising companies use ploys to give the audience a reason to buy their product that they are trying to sell. For example, if you turn on your television and you will see these types of advertisements in between your favorite sitcom. What you probably do not notice is the way that most women are portrayed in these advertisements. Most women in today's media are viewed as sex objects, and most advertisements use this as a way to sell a product. You might not notice this because this is a trend that has is common with advertising. This may seem to be a harmless way of promoting a product but these sexually provocative advertisements have had a grave effect on our society. Today's advertising industry has used women in a biased way causing repercussions to the women of today. The history of Western culture's opinion of feminine beauty has changed over the centuries. While women who were curvy and slightly bigger were once considered the most attractive, the trend n

But to some, they view these people as perfection and they strive to be like them. Plastic surgery has become more prevalent in society and can be viewed as a benefactor from the advertisement industry. A main cause of this trend is due to the overtly sexual advertisements that push the super model look to ordinary women. The trend of exhibiting sexy, thin, super exotic models and fashions seems to have no end in sight. A good example of the use of sex to endorse a product is Victoria's Secret. The constant pressure of trying to look like the latest fashion icon is more prevalent nowadays as well as the unrealistic expectations of a Barbie type figure for girls. This effects the general public's opinion of what women should look like, which is a greatly distorted view. Men enjoy looking at beautiful women, and men have stronger sexual urges than women, so sexual advertisements can be used more effectively on men. Even though there is no nudity, the way women are portrayed in a worse manner and used as objects. But I do not believe that just because underwear is the product, that it makes it right to have women prancing around half naked. The main appeal to women is that Victoria's Secret name has been advertised with sex appeal that women generally want to be involved with. The media is a controlling force in American society and the major problem is that advertisements are controlling the morals of our society as well. This most likely will escalate to extremes of unnecessary nudity and portrayal of women in a lewd manner. Men, on the other hand, account for only 15 percent, with barely less than 1 million patients.
