1900's
From homeopathic liniments and home remedies to corporal success, advertising has changed drastically throughout the last century. And how, when, and who you advertise to can dictate your success in the future. The two advertisements I will be comparing are Omega Oil,a balm type substance rubbed on to ease soreness, and Nyquil,a liquid medicine drank to ease you to sleep and cure common flu like symptoms. But why and how does it do that?*I think that one of the things that jumps out at the turn of the20th century is the fact that most people didn't go to doctors, and people who sold home remedies or a product such as Omega Oil really spiced the product up when advertising. An example of this would be in the Omega Oil ad, its claimed to be"natures own remedy for pain, with a sparkling green color, and theres n
*I believe that Nyquils advertisment is a typical ad in Americas fast pace lifestyle. So now, no one can legally sell "home remedies", yet some argue that they are still the best in today's society of large corporations. They both may ease your cold and its symptoms yet only Nyquil(in there mind)has the ability to cure your "nighttime, sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffyhead, fever so you can get the better sleep you need to feel better medicine". There's the "somewhat comical" part of the ad. The building still stands today and is one of the tallest buildings in Baltimore, which houses and displays a large clockthat is lit and seen throughout the city. "But don't tell grandma" that your taking it. They had monkeys, birds, and other various gadgets to try to pull the towns-people in. Patent medicines were remedies and liniments for various symptoms that were made in their own basements, usually in bathtubs. Coca-cola contained the drug opium, which later evolved into the name cocaine. It is short, sweet,to the point, and somewhat comical. *In the early 1900s America was introduced to the soft-drink coca-cola,which was not so"soft"in those days. They traveled few and far between, and eventually, some of these"basement tubs"that produced the remedies grew into large com!panys/ corporations in the city. For the early 1900s this is very good advertising, people then were somewhat"gullible"in a sense. Then, coca-cola was used as a"pick me up"for overworked housewives while they cleaned.
