The Tet Offensive

America's involvement started in the Vietnamese debate when in 1945 the United States did not want to accept the Communist Democratic Republic of Vietnam, which was created by Ho Chi Minh who became the president. According to Eisenhower's domino theory in which he feared that if an Asian country fell to the communists the other countries would also be in danger so the U.S. should try to prevent these cases. Vietnam was divided at the 17th parallel according to the Geneva Accords and the north was under Ho Chi Minh's control while the south was lead by Ngo Dinh Diem. In 1963 the military took over the power in South Vietnam because of the corruption of the Diem regime. It was the time when several American army advisors and soldiers went to Vietnam. The real military intervention started after the Tonkin Gulf incident in 1964 when Vietnamese ships shot on surveillance ships. The American president Lyndon B. Johnson started a bombing against the North as a response for it. The escalation of the war started and it last until 1968 when the North Vietnamese launched their Tet Offensive. In 1966 the Democratic party failed to increase taxes and the war in Vietnam also deteriorated the balance of payment in the United States. In this way they were not prepared what to expect from the war. President Johnson made a mistake when he did not tell the people before the attacks what they could expect in the future. After the Tet attacks the president set a 'hesitant tone' /Braestrup,1978:468/ and he started a strategy which was about to send others to the media to tell the news in connection with Vietnam. On the night between 30 and 31 January General Giap started his countrywide offensive in South Vietnam. At the convention the Democrats nominated Lyndon B. fortunecity/In fact, the Tet Offensive started earlier because on 21 January the North Vietnamese attacked Khe Sanh where the U. troops and the South Vietnamese since they thought that Khe Sanh was the original target and the commanders called there the majority of the troops. The problem leading to violence was that students started to protest against the segregation of a local bowling alley. He asked the Pentagon how the United States could win the war.
