A Glympse Into the World of a Mad Man On the first page of his book about the Manson Family murders Vincent Bugliosiwarns, "the story in which you are about to read will scare the Hell out of you" (Bugliosi1). This statement could not be more true. There have been many mass murders andserial killers throughout history, none however, have been as sick and twisted as CharlesManson. From 1969 until 1971 his was the story that captivated the nation. Manson andhis followers committed a spree of murders which shocked the world and left everyone Charles Manson was born November 12, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mansonnever knew his father and never had a real father figure; he was the illegitimate child of apromiscuous sixteen year-old, Kathleen Maddox. Maddox would leave for days andweeks at a time, leaving young Charlie with his grandparents and aunt. Once she evensold him for a pitcher of beer. Charlie and his mother were eating at a cafe one afternoonwhen their waitress jokingly offered to buy Charlie. His mother replied, "a pitcher ofbeer and he's yours." The book also speaks of "angels with breastplates of fire. This pieceof evidence was crucial to the prosecution since Manson had pressured Atkins in torepudiating her testimony. He took it to his father, who turned it into the LAPD. Upon opening the door she saw blood splashed everywhere and whatappeared to be a body on the lawn. Moving toward the house they found twomore bodies on the lawn, Abigail Folger and Voytek Frykowski. When no oneanswered the door Suthers began to notice things did not seem as they usually did aroundthe house. When she got to the front gate she noticed afallen telephone line and an unfamiliar car in the driveway. Chapman made her way tothe front door. The murder scene was found byWinifred Chapman, Sharon's housekeeper. Their investigation led them to Spahn Ranch, where Beausoleil, the mancharged in the Hinman case had been living. The two hadbeen tied together at the neck by a rope, which extended over a rafter in the ceiling. On January 15, 1971, seven months after the trial started, the jury begandeliberation.
