A Glimpse Into the Mind of a Madman
A Glympse Into the World of a Mad Man On the first page of his book about the Manson Family murders Vincent Bugliosi warns, "the story in which you are about to read will scare the Hell out of you" (Bugliosi 1). This statement could not be more true. There have been many mass murders and serial killers throughout history, none however, have been as sick and twisted as Charles Manson. From 1969 until 1971 his was the story that captivated the nation. Manson and his followers committed a spree of murders which shocked the world and left everyone Charles Manson was born November 12, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Manson never knew his father and never had a real father figure; he was the illegitimate child of a promiscuous sixteen year-old, Kathleen Maddox. Maddox would leave for days and weeks at a time, leaving young Charlie with his grandparents and aunt. Once she even sold him for a pitcher of beer. The book also speaks of "angels with breastplates of fire. This piece of evidence was crucial to the prosecution since Manson had pressured Atkins in to repudiating her testimony. He took it to his father, who turned it into the LAPD. Upon opening the door she saw blood splashed everywhere and what appeared to be a body on the lawn. Moving toward the house they found two more bodies on the lawn, Abigail Folger and Voytek Frykowski. When no one answered the door Suthers began to notice things did not seem as they usually did around the house. When she got to the front gate she noticed a fallen telephone line and an unfamiliar car in the driveway. Chapman made her way to the front door. The murder scene was found by Winifred Chapman, Sharon's housekeeper. Their investigation led them to Spahn Ranch, where Beausoleil, the man charged in the Hinman case had been living. The two had been tied together at the neck by a rope, which extended over a rafter in the ceiling. On January 15, 1971, seven months after the trial started, the jury began deliberation.
