As we all know Society's views on Crime and Punishment are not good ones. Without reading Ted Canover's, Newjack, the general overview of Crime and Punishment is that criminals should be punished the maximum. Criminals are not cut any slack; the general population does not really care about what happens to criminals in prisons and how unjust their sentences are.In his book, Canover expresses interactions between inmates and himself. He says that his time in Sing Sing, a maximum security facility was spent mostly interacting with inmates during dining hours, checking prison cells, and writing up disciplinary infraction statements. He spent most of the time, unarmed, and scared because there were about 1,800 convicted felons in this facility, and was guarded solely by about 700 guards. This is obviously not sufficient. In general society's attitude toward crime and punishment is not good, we just don't care. Inmates are looked upon as, "lowest of the low," and officers describe themselves as, "baby-sitters. Ted Canover spends 1 year as a correctional facility officer in Sing Sing, to get a detailed story of the lives of prison inmates, and the lives of these correctional officers. How can you put these mentally ill people and mix them with "normal" persons. More money has to be applied towards security, and especially for maximum security facilities, such as Sing Sing, which holds the most dangerous criminals. Society needs to place more emphasis on prisons, and understand that if more and more people are going to be incarcerated, then there has to be a contingency plan to better the prison systems. This prison is very old now, and in order to maintain these prisoners in an environment where they can live in humane conditions it has to be remodeled. " Because of these stereotypes of inmates and officers, society is influenced to think the way they do, very negative, about crime and punishment. This fact as well, reflects society's attitude towards crime and punishment. Yes, these are criminals who have disobeyed the law, but they are also humans, who deserve humane conditions to live in. This is another factor that reflects society's views on crime and punishment. This attitude of not caring is very clear because of all the things that Canover experienced throughout his term as correctional officers of Sing Sing. This attitude is widely spread among society because it is accepted that criminals are not going to change, and that's it. The Prison, once a model prison, but now New York State's most troubled maximum-security facility is in a dire need of a makeover.
