A Time to Kill
A Time to Kill is a novel written about how a ten-year old black girl named TonyaHailey's life was shattered when two rednecks beat and raped her, and then how her father took the law into his own hands and decided their punishment himself. Tonya was walking home from the grocery store when the two rednecks, Billy Ray Cobb and Pete Willard, saw her. They threw full beer cans at her, breaking her flesh right down to the bone. Taking turns, they straddled her and forcefully and brutally raped her. They tied her to a tree with ropes burning through her skin while they drank and laughed at her. When they had decided their fun was done, they threw her in the back of Billy Ray Cobb's yellow pickup truck and found an abandoned bridge, where they threw her to die. A family nearby found her and brought Tonya home. Her father, Carl Lee, wascalled form the mill earlier but took his time coming home because his wife had a habit of worrying too much and so he thought it was just another scare. When he walked in the door and saw his little girl all beat up, anger built up inside of him. He carried her to theambulance where they rushed her to the hospital. Elsewhere, the sheriff of Ford County, Ozzie Walls, was arresting Billy
When she came in that morning, there was a Mrs. That a past case he had claimed a man was legally sane turned out that theman examined was later admitted to several asylums for being legally insane. The sheriff was called and questioned about what he knew about the rape. Meanwhile, Jake took on anothercase, with Carl Lee's cellmate. He also identified pictures of the twomen's dead bodies in the courthouse. Carl Lee's new lawyer was paid for and his old lawyerwas without a case. It was hard to write a shortsummary because the book was so long and fully in-depth with everything. He was an alcoholic just like Lucien but he was alwayssober at trial. After ashort break, Ozzie was called to the stand as a witness. A mob gathered outside the courthouse with signs saying to 'free Carl Lee'. It would take about three or four days and the judge had deniedJake any rights to accompany Carl Lee to the hospital as well as at the hospital. I thought there was no way it could beinteresting if it was about a murder trial case. At Carl Lee's preliminary hearing, pretty much the same happened as did at Cobband Willard's hearing. Jake sent letters explaining he was now rehired as Carl Lee'sattorney, leading Bo Marsharfsky to call Jake and ask him a few questions about Carl Leerehiring him.
