             How Student Movements have changed the World
             From Berkeley, California in the sixties, to Tiananmen Square in China, student activism has been at the center of social justice movements. Human rights, civil rights, campaigns against evil leaders, animal rights, these are among the many issues that student activists have brought to national attention. The idealism and energy of student activism is a way for students to get their message to thousands of people. Student movements have been in existence almost as long as universities themselves. And in campus after campus, it is commonplace for student activists to learn and utilize political organizing skills to bring about effective social change. Today, activism is alive and well on college campuses. Activism is about bringing change and making people aware of controversial issues that the world is faced with. By staging protest, students are shedding light on the path toward racial and social justice. Although some people disapprove of student movements, these movements have functioned as a catalyst for social change because they have proved to bring down powerful leaderships and bring about new ideas that they believe in.
             On April 17, 1965, the United States dropped bombs on North Vietnam. U.S. troops attempted to stop the growth of national liberation movements and socialism. Students for the Democratic Society (SDS) led the largest peace march in American history for that time period. SDS advocated participatory democracy and economic justice, criticizing corporate- military interlocks and unresponsive government bureaucracy (Online Encyclopedia). Also, as casualties started growing in Vietnam, a series of loose-knit coalitions called the "Mobes" coordinated thousands of local anti- war groups into massive nationwide demonstrations (13, Adams). On November 15, 1969 about 25,000 students rallied around the White House protesting against the Vietnam War (13, Sturrock). ...
