In Defiance of Darwin

             This week's readings one article caught my attention. The article "In Defiance of Darwin," by Lynnell Hancock focuses on a public school in the Bronx that turns dropouts into scholars. Hostos-Lincoln Academy of Science, a public high school for 300 black and Latino at-risk students; Founder Dr. Michele Cataldi; Student Stanley Mustafa; How students provide a retort to arguments in the book `The Bell Curve,' by Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray.              From the description the article gave us " Now the hub of the nation's poorest neighborhood," reminded me the time I was in the Bronx. My friend Kay and I decided one day to meet up with an old friend who moved to the Bronx our senior year in high school. Driving through the Bronx it was filthy and dirty. A lot of trash on the ground, people walking across the street and the schools were not in the best condition.
             However, I am glad there are schools like Hostos –Lincoln Academy of Science in these poor inner cities to help boost children's self-esteem so they could be someone and somebody one day. Not a lot of kids who live in the inner cities such as the Bronx have priviledges of bettering their life or education. To read this article and hear that there are schools who are willing to help these kids just makes me feel that if we give these kids a try they could improve there lives and education. I say this because most myths and stereotypes bout inner cities are that the highest school drops out rates are from inner cities. They have the highest rate in birth out of wedlock and pregnancy. Not knowing that most of these childrens are coming from broken homes, single parent, or abusive homes which make them not prone to thinking about education as a key factor in life.
