Affirmative Action
Think of this, a man is ignored and shut out at work because everyone thinks he got his job because of his color. The problem is, he was more qualified than every other person, black or white, that applied for the job, and he is treated like he is not qualified. This whole situation should be avoided. Our affirmative action policies in America need to be changed. The ways that people look at each other is different in the workplace because everyone wonders if they or a co-worker has gotten their job due to affirmative action. Minorities think that affirmative action is used to help past wrongs, but whites see it as a form of reverse discrimination. People say that unqualified minorities get jobs from more qualified whites, and that is causing more qualified people to take lower paying jobs. Since the beginning of the use of affirmative action, America has become a racially tense and a strained place to live in, since whites and minorities fail to agree on the effectiveness of ! To whites this act is extremely unfair to white males and for them, it is a pure form of discrimination. The first problem affirmative action establishes for minorities is that it places a stigma on groups who benefit from affirmative action, especially those who actually earn their position because they are qualified for it. The actual phrase "affirmative action" was first used in President Lyndon Johnson's 1965 Executive Order 11246, which requires federal contractors to "take affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed, and that employees are treated during employment, without regard to their race, creed, color, or national origin," (Lewis 15). Some people feel that the first reason affirmative action should be stopped is that employees often are hired that are not qualified to execute their jobs effectively. Minorities and women feel that it is not fair to be treated unequally for the same work and time put into their careers. In addition, minority's problems due to affirmative action are not exclusive to the work place. Most of the "anti" views of affirmative action come from the group that does not benefit from affirmative action, white males. In order to reach this point we must devise an alternative to replace affirmative action, not just abolish it, but as long as affirmative action is in effect there will always be racial tension. People also need to realize that this nation's vast diversity is a great thing, and if we can all work together, this country will be stronger than ever. We should recognize that affirmative action is a temporary measure. Without this thinking, we will still live in a tense, racially divided society. For example, white males hold 95 percent of senior managerial positions, and they comprise just 43 percent of the workforce (Rosenfeld 232).
