The Autobiography of an Ex-colored Man

Some Americans will give the African American talents, a full service uplift or let them pass as being white and they will have no limitations on their talents. Seeing them as being white brings no racism into play. Therefore, racism is just an act of cruelty that hurts the African American society. This story of an Ex-Colored Man describes the racial issues he faces as he journeys through life.

The young ex-colored mans earliest of his life and home in Georgia were very limited. He lived with his mother and a white man used to come all the time to visit him when he was younger. Shortly after he remembered his childhood, he moved away to Connecticut with his mom. They finally got settled in Connecticut and got on their feet. Then all of a sudden his mom started to receive money under the table, from the white man in Georgia, which in turn helped support the family.

The young mans mom was a very neat and hard working woman, also a very careful and nurturing mother. She loved her son and supported him in everything that he wanted to do. With his mother’s support, the young man was able to overcome obstacles that stood in his way.

His gambling took a toll on him, like no other. Another memory he encountered at school was when the principal asked all the white children to stand up. This is the Story of an Ex-colored Man. In the process, the young man was robbed of all his money, before entering college.

Later on that day as he walked home all the kids teased him and called him a derogatory name. As he recalls, his first day at school he knew no one and began to feel very lonely. Now after knowing the truth the mother and son were able to discuss and help each other since his true identify was let out. She finally accepted the marriage and the two were married, moved to Europe. He was determined to abandon his racial music project in order to make a living in New York as an Ex-Colored Man. He later found out his father married a local high class southern white woman and that he promised to educate his first child.

Later on after he met his father he gets in contact with a group of German musician in Berlin, which made him think it was his fate to return to the south, and make classical music for the people for money in return. Finally giving up gambling, he found a job at a club and learned to play rag time. Just as he was finishing his research, and about to settle in Nashville, Tennessee to begin composing, he witnessed a brutal lynching by fire. The young man was then shocked, because he had developed an unconscious prejudice about blacks.
