The Iliad

             After reading The Iliad, there are so many characters that stand out. All of them have very unique characteristics about them. I find Achilles to be the most unique and most believable character.
             Achilles is the leader of the Achaeans. He is also son of Peleus, a mortal king and the son of the sea-goddess Thetis. Achilles is a well-respected warrior; the Achaeans needed Achilles to help them fight the Trojans. Rage-Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus' son Achilles, murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses, hurling down to the House of Death so many sturdy souls, great fighters' souls but made their bodies carrion, feasts for the dogs and birds, and the will of Zeus was moving toward its end. Begin, Muse, when the two first broke and clashed, Agamemnon lord of men and brilliant Achilles. (Pg 98 lines 1-5) I think right after those lines, you get a clear view of Achilles and really look forward to learning more about him. In book XXII Achilles showed that he was heartless when he killed Hector. Achilles also showed that he was sympathetic towards elders by returning Hectors body when Priam begged for it. Achilles is portrayed as a well-respected warrior, heartless, and sympathetic towards elders. In book I of the Iliad Achilles first showed that he is well respected when he calls the Achaeans to assembly, an idea from the goddess Hera, who had pity on the dying Achaeans. Achilles a leader even before his time of greatness spoke up for his people against the son of Atreus saying "I believe now that straggling backwards we must make our way home if we can even escape death, if fighting now must crush the Achaeans and the plague likewise".(pg 105, lines 1-3) Agamemnon who claims himself as the far greatest of all the Achaeans shows fear to Achilles by calling him a "good fighter though you be, godlike ".(pg 113, line 413-14) By defeating Agamemnon Achilles proves to be the greatest Achaean soldier and the ...
