Pride and Prejudice
I think that society in Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice is portrayed as conservative. I believe that the author personally thinks that society should both change as well as stay the same. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is told through the third person omniscient point of view. Although that is the case, I see the story through Elizabeth's point of view. Jane Austen made Elizabeth the central character who, in my opinion, felt both ways about society. A woman is expected to behave in certain ways. Elizabeth, however, doesn't conform to the norms. Elizabeth is radical in a few ways. She turns Mr. Collins' proposal of marriage down at a time when the only thing that women were supposed to do was marry "up" or just get married at all. Also, the marriage to Mr. Collins would have saved her family from losing their home and such after Mr. Bennet passed a
I believe the conservative part of her is when she finally decided to marry Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth and even Jane and Mr. Like what was said in class, I think it is funny that although Elizabeth did something radical by marrying Darcy it looked normal because she ends up marrying into money anyways. In this book, Austen has pointed out the elements of society that she found objectionable. Bennet is shown as an idiot obsessed with getting her daughters married and the younger sisters are shown as lacking common sense and as only being worried about buying bonnets and flirting. Also, when Lydia elopes with Wickham, Austen treats reputation as a very serious matter. Miss Bingley was shocked that Elizabeth appeared after walking by herself as well as the fact that she showed up all muddy. Darcy felt about her family and hated the things he said about her younger sisters. Through my examples you can see both the radical points in the story which lead me to believe Jane Austen would like society to change. Jane Austen also makes fun of how Lady Catherine thought that because she was part of the high society that she could talk to anyone how she wanted and get everything she wanted - by having Elizabeth stand up to her showed that Jane Austen thought that was ridiculous. She walked by herself to see her sick sister at Netherfield when women weren't supposed to walk by themselves.
