War was thought to be productive and nesscesary by the older generation and central political figures, but when one hears the viewpoint of the young men who actually had to encounter it, it is a much different story. War affects the lives of people in ways that the average person cannot even begin to comprehend. He went through many different jobs, not knowing what he wanted out of life anymore. Hemingway wrote many different accounts of post- war experiences, and the lost generation of men that it produced. A book that is filled with references and description of the "Lost Generation" is All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque. He was just a young boy, and was forced to serve in a war, which he hardly even knew or cared anything about. Therefore, they were known as the Lost Generation. The men knew this, and lost all trust in the older generation. The adults, who forced them into the war, molded the young men into believing that it was a noble and admirable thing to do, but really their only motives were greed and corruption. " The theme of the "Lost Generation" was very prominent throughout both books, All Quiet on the Western Front and A Farewell to Arms. After he had become ill and gotten out of the war, Henry felt that there was just no points to it, and he was exhausted. Remarque, who himself had been drafted into the German army, came out completely lost and disillusioned. Although the main characters of each book were affected in very different ways, both books portrayed the emotional heartache and physical struggles that the war caused, leaving the men with a sense of unfulfillment and disillusion. Like Remarque, Paul, the main character of All Quiet, went into the war full of hopes and dreams of the life he would someday live. During the war, Paul went through so many terrible and shocking experiences that he knew would change hislife forever.
