Understanding Invasion Games
This essay will identify the principles of play applicable to invasion games; it will examine how the principles of play are implemented in similar and different ways in hockey, football and basket ball. It will focus on the effects of the rules/laws of each game, attacking and defending. Play according to Huizinga is 'a voluntary activity or occupation exercised within certain fixed rules of time and place, according to rules freely accepted but absolutely binding, having its aim in itself and accompanied by a feeling of tension, joy and the consciousness that this is different from ordinary life'To perform effectively in game, players must have a full understanding of the objectives, styles and the principles of play required of them during the different phases of the game and in the different areas of the court/pitches. Invasion games are team games where the purpose is to invade the opposition's territory with the purpose of scoring (Dr Paul Webb 2003). They should be competitive, institutionalised, and should involve vigorous physical exertion and complex skills. There are four main principles of play applicable to invasion games. Those being pressure, possession, go forward and support. These apply throughout all
Within hockey and football support is given more or less in the same way. The longest a team can have possession for in basket ball is thirty seconds, so this has quite an affect. In football the only time rule that may affect pressure is the six second rule that a goal keeper has to release the ball when throwing it. This is relevant to all three sports. Then there is the five second rule where on a throw-in from out-of-bounds a player must throw, bounce or roll the ball to another player in the court within five seconds, and finally the three second rule where a player is not allowed to remain in his/her oppositions restricted area for more than three seconds when he/she or his/her team has control of the ball. This is relevant to the other two sports, just more so in basket ball due to the time and space of the court and rules. Within all of the three sports it is important to keep possession and if to lose it should regain it at the earliest opportunity. The principle of play 'go forward' applies to all three sports but as said before, but in different contexts. The third principle of play is support, this principle of play is important within attacking and defending as without support from team mates the team wont be successful, when attacking team mate should move forward with continuity increasing the speed of attack and getting into supporting positions early. This only mainly applies to football and hockey though due to the pitch sizes as these pitches have the width and length and create the opportunity to do this quite often whereas in basket ball, the court is a lot smaller and the marking normally quite tight therefore this opportunity is very rare.
