Jaco Pastorious
Jaco Pastorious III had a strong music career along with a remarkable lifestyle. His rapidity, and talent for composing, earned Jaco, the title "the greatest bass player in the world." Jaco was born on December 1, 1951 in Norristown, Pennsylvania. As the son of a renowned jazz drummer, Jaco had been exposed to jazz at a young age. At the age of seven, he and his family moved to Ft. Lauderdale. While in Florida, he was introduced to many different styles of music ranging from Caribbean to rhythm 'n' blues (Milkowski, 10). As a little boy, Jaco's father would take him and his brother to various clubs in Philadelphia, and often push them to go on stage and sing along with the band. Jaco loved the opportunity to perform in front of an audience (Milkowski, 21).Jaco was originally a drummer, but after a football injury to the wrist, he switched to the bass. One of his first bands as a bassist was the Las Olas Brass, which he joined at the age of fifteen. Las Olas Brass was a nine-piece horn band that played well liked tunes by artists such as Aretha Franklin and James Brown. Kenny Neubauer, a bass player for the band, was planning to leave and Jaco saw this as a great opportunity to become the bands new bas
Jaco expressed himself in his music and his feelings showed throughout all his songs (Milkowski, 101). Jaco worked on this song a long time because he was looking for perfection. Jaco surprised the audience by having a 20-piece big band instead of his usual trio; luckily the response from the audience was a positive one (Milkowski, 116). Jaco rose to fame from obscurity after joining Weather Report. Jaco was different from the rest of the players. This song was one of the longest to record and produce since everything needed to be perfect (Milkowski, 101). When the song reaches its climax, there are some lyrics, but they are hard to understand. I read the information about Jaco from the Grawboski text, and I thought he was interesting. The sound of the drums, along with the bass and the vocals gives this song a unique sound. Johann Sebastian Bach originally composed "Chromatic Fantasy," but it was later re-released by Jaco. I thought it was cool he grew up in Ft. Jack DeJonhette on drums, Toot Thielemans playing the harmonica, Herby Hancock playing a piano solo and a full horn section, took part in the making of this song (Milkowski, 103). As the years passed he became better and was considered a musical genius by those who knew him. Jaco had his initial encounter with Joe Zawinul outside the Guzman Theater in Miami in 1975. The compact disk I chose to listen to was Jaco Pastorious "Word of Mouth.
