Mass Media: The Culprits

             The mass media in today's society is money driven, and it seems that they will go to any length to profit. The media's sex sells approach is of particular concern. The media controls the images being put out and does not care what the outcome is aside from the accounting numbers at the end of the day. Women are the most affected by the media's thoughtless images of sex sells which permeates all areas of marketing today. The media projects sexual images of the perfect woman and exploits her sexuality for monetary gain. The media bases the images it portrays on stereotypes and most often follows the sex sells campaign. Women are often portrayed as objects. Women are already vulnerable in the respect of physical strength so for women to be portrayed as sex objects is not only wrong, but it is dangerous for many reasons. Women are constantly reminded of their flaws and are subject to criticism, low self-esteem, and sexual attacks. The objectification and the implication of the media supporting ongoing exposure to the stereotypical sexual ideals of women are harmful to their well being.
             The way mass media treats women is similar to the way scientists treat lab rats. Women are constantly put on display and have no control over what goes on around them. The media controls the way women are viewed through television commercials, advertisements, and soap operas; just to name a few. The objectification of women is prevalent in today's society. The media is the top source of information for the public in today's society and they use this power to sell sex every second for profit. Too often, anyone can see women as sex objects just riding down the highway. Billboards show images of nude women wrapped around a liquor bottle. Sex sells in music videos in particular.
