Autism
Sleep deficiency, having a high pain and fear thresh hold, poor social skills and echolalia are all common characteristics of autism. Autism is a "neurobiological disorder" that impairs communication and social skills. There is as of yet no clear consensus on the exact cause of autism. Still there are many theories and assumptions made by parents and their physicians. This lack of substantial information of the subject may by credited to the fact that the disease was not recognized until the World War II era. This has left many concerned parents uncertain as to what to do about the long term care of their children with special needs. Three of those children are Charlie, Austin, and Jimmy. This paper will discuss and analyze the terms and characteristics of each of the three unique boys' disorder. Charlie was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. His symptoms included "tantrums where he would flip himself backwards", staring at objects for long periods of time, subtle changes in routine, and inadequate speech for his age norms. Concern was first raised that Charlie may be autistic when his parents, concerned with his abnormal speaking patterns, took him for a speech evaluation. Charlie was then refereed to a child-dev
Just as Austin, Jimmy appeared to be developing normal; he sat a 7 months and walked at thirteen. The assistance's worked with Charlie on a broad range of learning activities. Doctors prescribed the drugs fluvoxamine, for his social skills, and trazodone, to aid with his sleeping. Last is Jimmy, a 4 1/2-year-old boy whose parents were alerted of his disorder by basically the same signals as Charlie and Austin's parents. Jimmy's mother also reports no problems during pregnancy. In addition Charlie was put on a gluten and casein (proteins difficult for individuals with autism to break down) free diet. elopment clinic where he underwent a two-day evaluation that he refused nearly all the test. While Charlie's parents sought help threw aids, Austin parents chose medication as treatment for his disorder. Other noticed signs were that he did not adapt well to change, he would throw tantrums whenever cared for by someone other than his mother, and he would not play with children other than his four-year old brother. Now Charlie is reportedly able to socialize with other children by offering handshakes. As stated previously there is currently no plausible explanation as to how autism occurs, nor is there a cure or specific treatment supported by the medical community. Still the final verdict was that Jimmy was another of the 1 in every 500 children that are Autistic. When evaluated at two years old test concluded that he had the language of an eighteen to fifteen month old, preferred "solitary play" and did not interact well in social situation; thus he was diagnosed with autism. Charlie's parents report that due to all the changes in Charlie's lifestyle his progress has been astonishing.
