Love Stories
"Love Stories" is an essay literally written about love stories. Louis Menand expresses his view on what the world wants in terms of how people view love in relation with love stories. Menand's definition of a love story is "a story not about how happy two people are but about how unhappy they are...about either the difficulty they are having in getting together or the difficulty they are having in staying together."(605). Throughout the essay Menand argues that "what all the world really loves is not a lover, but a good love story."(605). Through a number of well explained points one can get a feel of where the author is coming from. Menand also divides the love story genre into three categories, and at the same time he explains his view on how they attract the audience. After reading "Love Stories", one can agree with Louis Menand's arguement, given that he makes some interesting points and provides convincing evidence to support In paragraph 3, Menand clearly states his position saying, "What all the world really loves is not a lover. It's a love story."(605). One can agree with him, because even though two individuals form a relationship out of love for on
Going to see a movie based on a love story, or reading an actual love story gives that individual a feel for love. For example, in some countries fathers choose a man whom they want their daughters to marry. One can agree with Menand's categorizing of the love story genre because he provides reasonable enough evidence to get his point across. Everything that people do or think about doing in relationships, has already been done in a love story. It is appealing to them because it is something that they have experienced and can relate to. Menand describes the second category as stories that are "not force-of-nature stories", but are "force-of-circumstance stories. It is true that all the world wants a love story. For example, they want to experience the walks in the park, the dinners by candle light, and the other romances that are often used in love stories. Thus the relationship between the two is not natural because they did not willingly form a relationship, making their relationship a force-of-circumstance. Menand describes the first category as stories as stories that "don't evoke the emotion of love; they symbolize it.
