Better Nutrition Mean Better Brain-Power
The brain is the central processing unit that is in control
of the mind, body, and all of its functions. A person's diet can
directly affect the ability for the brain to learn and understand
materials. Depending on the brain stimulating chemicals
contained in food, eating the right things can raise one to their
full mental potential. In a sense, people can eat their way to
Neurotransmitters are chemicals that pass information among
cells in the brain. These chemicals are manufactured by nerve
cells that use specific food components as raw material, so the
food a person eats directly effects the chemicals in their brain;
every food creates various neurotransmitters with different
functions. Tryptophan is an amino acid that is found in protein
rich foods and when it is digested it is made into the
neurotransmitter serotonin. Thus a person's mood and mental
ability are greatly influenced by the ratio of the five central
amines, called neurotransmitters, or nervous system chemicals.
These nervous system chemicals are greatly affected by the
different nutrients one eats (Prased 3).
The central amines include: norepinephrine, epinephrine,
serotonin, dopamine, and phenylethylamine. Norepinephrine is an
amine that triggers hostility and irritability; einephrine
triggers anxiety. Serotonin is an amine that can make a person
feel relaxed and even sleepy, but too much can inhibit a person's
ability to concentrate and perform to their absolute potential.
Dopamine, which comes from the amino acid tyrosine, can enliven
the brain and make it more alert causing the person to think and
react faster. Phenylethylamin makes a person excited when it is
at lower levels, but paranoid if the levels are too high. It is
also known as the "love" peptide because it is manufactured in
large amounts when people are in love. ...
