Gay marriage
President Bush has announced on February 2004 his backing for a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage. His decision comes after San Francisco's mayor decided to start granting marriage licenses to gay and lesbian people. Civil marriage is simply the legal recognition of a couple's relationship. It is a legal, civil recognition - Not a religious one. Civil marriage is about a couple's love, commitment, and strengthening families--with or without children. We value their commitment, not their procreative capacity. The proponents of that argument are hard pressed to explain why, if that's the case, that infertile couples are allowed to marry. I, for one, would love to be there when the proponent of such an argument is to explain to his post-menopausal mother or impotent father that since they cannot procreate, they must now surrender their wedding rings. Such an argument fails to persuade based on the marriages society does allow routinely, without even a second thought. While no one denies that love is what marriage is about, many people still absolve to see that same-sex marriage is wrong. The Massachusetts state supreme court was quick to make homosexual marriages legal and to recognize same sex unions (Harper). Couples are given tax breaks by filing their taxes jointly, which usually saves them money. In the early 20th century a black man marrying a white woman was unnatural and serious crime. Marriage is a legal bond between two people not a religious act unless you choose to make it that. world, past and present that have legalized some form of same-sex marriage. Rather than having to grow up in children's home and being shipped around from institution to institution the child would be put in a loving home. It would not hurt to slow the growth rate and not have everyone procreate all the time, so by accepting gay marriage we would be reducing the number of new children brought into the world and taking better care of those who are already in the world. And there are other spheres of our lives and existence, outside the home, where the State should not be a dominant presence. Two men were found by a police officer having sex; they were arrested charged and convicted.
