Bismarck
From the day the "Iron Chancellor" was appointed into his position, the fate of Germany, and of Europe would forever be changed. Otto von Bismarck was able to take the scattered remnants of a grand empire and mold it back into a great nation. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, a hero is defined as: A man noted for his special achievements in a particular field. By careful analysis of Bismarck's role as prime minister in Prussia, one will easily see the extent to which he was a hero.Prior to the 19th century, a unified Germany seemed nothing more then an idealistic dream. This dream was that the thirty-nine states of a once great empire could again be joined together and become a major power in central Europe. Many believed that a unified Germany was key to the aspect of peace between the warring super powers of Europe. The unification came a step closer in 1815 with the formation of the German Confederation. However, the German states still felt little kinship with each of the thirty-nine states. What they needed was a father figure to lead them, to bring them together. This figure would be Prussia, and in 1834 the confederation established the Zollverein under Prussian leadership.
They were Germans, something for so long that they could say they were, but never united. He left the parliament to deal with domestic matters only. "His had been a great career, beginning with the three wars in eight years and ending with a period of twenty years during which he worked for the peace of Europe, despite countless opportunities to embark on further enterprises with more than an even chance of success. Prussia realized the potential of a unified Germany lead by their own government. His goal above everything else was to increase the prestige, power, and economic well being of Prussia. He was a man of diplomacy that only he understood what he was doing. With Austria completely out, Bismarck continues his strive forward with the plans of unification. For the first time in what seemed for so long, the people and the government were content, and moral all over was high. Throughout the ages we have seen many great leaders such as Caesar, Charlemagne, Washington, Roosevelt, Churchill, and Mao. This angered the French, and taking the bait like Bismarck hoped, they declared war. What he meant by this was that Germany was content with what they had. "The great questions of the day will not be decided by speeches and majority decisions-that was the mistake of 1848-1849-but by iron and blood. With the idea of Prussia taking a leadership role, Bismarck knew he had to get rid of all Austrian influence in the German states. Infuriated at first, they soon became solid supporters of him. 3 With the people's thoughts and ideas wrapped up with the thought of unification.
