Block Scheduling

Four students have the same assignment due next class. One student does it that night. Two students take two days to do the assignment. Lastly, one student does the assignment the next night. All four students hand the assignment in on time and get full credit for it. How can this be? These four students attend Woodland Regional High School (WRHS) where they have block scheduling. In block scheduling students have four 80 minute classes on a regular school day, plus lunch and advisory. This means they have two different days with four differen

In rotated block scheduling, at WRHS, students are given an advisory period. In a regular scheduled day student would get seven periods worth of homework. Advisory is twenty minutes long and take place after lunch. Most students in WRHS are aginst block scheduling, but after researching and really thinking about it I have come to realize that having a class every other day for 80 minutes makes a big difference in learning. Most of the time the student will be able to talk to the teacher when he/she is having problems. This allows the teacher to get to know and understand the student well enough to sense if something is wrong. The student gets to know the teacher not only as a teacher, but as a friend. A student is also able to get extra help the next day if they realize they don't understand what they are learning. Not only does a student have less homework, but he/she also has an extra day to do it because classes rotate every other day. During advisory class kids talk about things going on around the world, read stories that have a good meaning in the end, and if a student has a problem they can talk to the class about it. Every night students from WRHS get four periods worth of homework. That gives students more times to focus on their homework every night. Unlike other classes, advisory is everyday. A very good concept of advisory is that students keep the same advisor all four years of highschool.
