Role of the God in Oedipus
Many people in today's society find adultery to be wrong; many of the Greek gods were involved in affairs with other gods or goddesses. Through his father, and through himself. Which would be Oedipus killing himself. Also, in the beginning of the play Apollo orders them to kill the killer of the former king. Artemis shows the strength of women and the independence such as Jocosta. Artemis is very loyal to her mother Lito. Laios believes he has wisdom and believes that he is tricking the gods. After Tiresias tells Laios about his future son, Laios decides to put his son, Oedipus up for adoption, to trick the gods. In this quote Tiresias is talking to Oedipus about the past and the future. Laios in the play believes that he has wisdom, and can fool the gods. In a way, Oedipus is very loyal to his real mother Jocosta. That lies within Apollo's competence, as it is his concern"(Line 57). Every god is sybolic to the play. Also, Apollo is a god of wisdom, which is symbolizing Laios, Oedipus's father. It may not be in a big way but they are all symbolic.
