Cain
Cain, from the Bible, is the person who brought the evil of fratricide into the world. He opened the gates for two very evil characters in Grendel of Grendel and King Claudius of Hamlet. Throughout their respective epic poem and play, these characters portray the utmost evil within our society. "Claudius is thus not only Cain but Adam. Claudius's sin has, for Hamlet at least, turned Denmark into a fallen Eden; thorns and thistles dominate the landscape." King Claudius' evil is shown through the play but it is especially shown in the murder of the late King Hamlet of Denmark. King Hamlet is a very respected figure in the country of Denmark; Claudius' choice to kill Hamlet not only results in death for Claudius, it also results in the end of Denmark's reign of power. Grendel, born into a life of social troubles, has many problems dealing with his identity and appearance. To gain attention, he goes on a killing rampage and kills numerous innocent people along the way. His motive for this is to gain attention from the people who used to never pay attention to him; his motive also has to deal with his insecurity concerning his looks. Insecurity is a big topic in these two characters. Both acted upon decisions based on a lack of atten
74) 6In this quote Scott brings together morality, this topic is based solely on an individual's own conscious. As much as this was Claudius' fault for changing Hamlet's purpose in life from waiting in line for royalty to seeking revenge of a deceased king, critic Wilson Knight feels as though Prince Hamlet is the one who brought this upon himself and Hamlet is to blame not Claudius. " A hero must have free will or his fate would be decided for him, and his death could be avoided. This is best exemplified when Grendel begins his raids up Horgrothar's villages and meadhalls. Hamlet is a danger to the state, even apart from his knowledge of Claudius' guilt. 5Knight's analysis is quite unique in its own right. One decision made by society that impaired Grendel's social acceptatance from the beginning was that of alienating him. In Hamlet, Hamlet had one fatal flaw; he was too great. 4This quote is showing how Claudius is hurting on the inside for the actions he has taken. Just like Adam was punished for the forbidden fruit so was Claudius. Grendel and Claudius chose a dishonorable route and by choosing this route they chose a dishonorable death. They are always trying in vain to find out what is wrong with him. They were made fun of and beaten up for not being a certain way. King Hamlet of Denmark is the people's king; they love him dearly because during his reign as king Denmark has become a powerful country.
